Title: Frame 'Markal' markings decoded
Post by: ExportMach on March 08, 2010, 08:09:14 PM
I was showing a Mustanger buddy my '65 coupe and the 'D' markings on the #1 crossmember. It occured to me that the marking was telling the assembly line workers that they need to install disc brakes. Thoughts?

Is this a San Jose car ??? - You forgot to mention

Guessing it might be. If so and there are no other marks on the cross member I would guess it is a 289 2V or 4V car.

The D has nothing to do with disc brakes (found on thousands of non-disc cars) and is found consistently through the years at that paint in at least one of three locations (sometimes two of the three)  likely IMHO depending on the shift (particular worker that liked a particular location)

In talking with line workers no one has identified a purpose for it yet

Oops . . . you are correct, mine is a SJ-built, 289 2V car (Dec 1964). I cannot see any other markings on the crossmember or radiator support.

Rats, I thought I had a flash of brilliance.

edit: (Dec 1961) to (Dec 1964)
