67 Remote view mirror glass date code
« on: December 12, 2016, 08:57:03 PM »
I looked through the library's car glass date code info and unfortunately remote rear view mirror glass date codes were overlooked. The date code on the mirror in question reads  2-DMI-7 normally I would read this as month first then year, 2- February and 7- being 67 since this came from a 67 built (4/28/67) car. The reason Im asking about this is the person I talked to about this interpreted the date as year first and month second, 2-72 and 7-july. I hope Im right thanks Paul. ;)

I believe it is a Feb 67 date code . I know some restorers that will take a correct dated glass and transfer it to another body.

I have done it, not easy but do able. Worth the effort to have a correct date coded glass.

Would not confirm. Why?
Because I have a mirror 4 DMI 3. Would mean April 63 according to above.  But can't be. The mirror has the shape of a 67/68 car.
Even year first, month second doesn't make sense to me.
Imho there  must be another specification behind.
Thx Ralf

I'm NOT an expert on decoding glass or mirror dates but it seems that the "decade" of production of these items is not coded into the date code so if your "decoding process" is correct, it could be possible the one you are looking at is a Service Replacement part.

In other words your example could be 73,83 or 93 . Not to say a NOS piece with a 7 or 8 couldn't be 78,88 etc. The code with a relevant number is better then one with a no way it's relevant number.  I mentioned the process to switch mirror glass as a alternate way to get a date coded mirror so those looking don't get too frustrated. I would like to say that sometime people get too evolved with the nuance details and disregard the big picture or more visible aspects.

I just obtained a 67 DS mirror (has C7AB17743B mirror base and 67 style adjusting knob) with 6JC7 date code

Decipher the code please? So far, I am confused with what was shared earlier in this thread. (want to wrap my head around mirror codes better)

FWIW; the OE dual racing mirrors on my 69 are date stamped 8JC8 and decode; 1968  September.  The C8 is the prefix to the engineering number.  Brian

Following the decipher you describe, it seems odd that the numbers on the several "JC" mirrors I have seen so far are all SEPTEMBER dates (or is it?). If others concur, this code on my mirror would be 1966, September C7 engineering. This fits well to my need but I have t wonder why there are other 1967 examples like  1 DM1 7 OR 4 DM1 3

I was beginning to think there were two suppliers. JC and DM

Maybe too complicated to understand at this point in time...

... I know some restorers that will take a correct dated glass and transfer it to another body.

So, going along these lines of discussion and using a date coded glass removed from an original, I noticed the "etching" of the code, at least in the example I am working with, is etched into the "silvering" layer, not on the outer surface. (there was previous conversations on "etching" a code ONTO a replacement glass, similar to what is done on windshields).

I will upload a picture of the etching with a few "backlight shots" to show what I am trying to write out.
