caspian blue 64 vs 65 both code H
« on: September 09, 2017, 05:33:44 PM »
I have found two different numbers for code H  ppg 12547 vs ppg 12752

one is for 64 the other for 65

Do you know when this (date) change was made?

I have a Feb 65 NJ car that has many early body panels. (hood, fire wall, floor pan, trunk floors, upper cowl single speed wipers,2 speed heater).

I believe the colors are not the same and want to get the correct color.

thanks

The color should be the same for 64.5 through 65.  If there is an original sample on your car, have it matched by a paint shop.

Charles,
there is no original paint except under the trunk lid and maybe under the hood.

My paint guy said the early color has bigger flakes and more purple.

There must be a date when this was changed.

Just a possibility but did you check behind the headlight rings (the protected headlight bucket area)? Just a thought - often a nice protected coat of paint there

Under the trunk lid might be a good source.  Where the glass attached, rear package tray for a coupe and under front edge of the dash pad are also areas to check.

As mentioned, best to get original paint matched, or mix up both codes and see which one is closest.

Haven't heard about 2 formulas during 64.5-65, but won't refute the possibility.

Keep in mind that modern tints are going to be different from 50 years ago, so going by paint code usually won't yield an exact match.

body has been completely striped except for hood and trunk lid. I just found about the two codes.
I don't care which code it turns out to be just want the one that would be correct for the build date.

The Ford code is listed as the same for 64.5-65, M1544

The 12752 PPG code is for '64, the 12547 is for '65.  If there was in fact a difference, the '64 code would switch to the '65 one during the new model for '65 transition.  That would have taken place in August '64.  With that in mind, your Feb '65 would then use the 12547 code.

Do we know for sure the change was in Aug.
so a May 64 car would be a slightly differant color than a Nov. car

It is highly likely that it would have changed at the 64.5 to 65 transition time.  There were many other changes that happened then, the most significant being the change from generator to alternator systems.  Also, interior code changes, engine codes, etc...  Not to mention a reset of the car sequence numbers, with San Jose resetting to 125001 and Dearborn at 250001.

Charles,

thank you, I will use the later color

Do you know when the body panel changes occurred?

(hood, upper cowl, firewall , floorpan, trunk floors)

Most of those were transition items that didn't happen at the same time.  They have been discussed before, so try searching old topics first.

Posted a TSB article covering the trunk change to the different spare tire retainer, if that is what your referring to, a couple of days ago. Search should help. Cowl change has been covered somewhat (depending on what plant) in others

NJ plant

trunk floor ,  rib added around bumper support
floor pan , moved seat belt attachment on pass side
firewall, added knock out for ac lines
cowl top, deleted threaded bezel for wiper spindles
Hood,  folded front edge

I have spent several hours searching for these things and have not found answers yet.

thank you

The hood would have been phased out way before your car was made since NJ didn't start production until Feb '65.  The hoods changed around September/October '64.

Firewall would have been early '65, my guess is March/April

The cowl changed around March/April also

Can't help on the other 2.

Would be better splitting this topic off to another one now since we are no longer discussing paint codes.

I guess I have an early hood and headlight buckets to sell
also shopping for the correct parts.

Thank you
I assumed the hood that came with the car 30 years ago was the original.
