Build sheet type of order - 1968

Its a fairly common code - have a fair number of common types of 68's with that code on buildsheets

On the order sheet, there was a place for type of order, either '1-Retail' or '2-Stock'.  Most likely, Retail was given higher priority.  'Fleet' was also another order type.  'T.O.' is also on the dealer delivery '2' copy.

Yes - Think about how long it took a person or family to save up for a car in 68. Allot more people in those days saved up to purchase cars and didn't borrow ti buy. Most remembered the depression really well and it affected how they saved, trusted banks and spent their money.

Retail price was $2898.52.

My parents bought a new car every 3-5 years in this era and always paid by the month.
I still remember the little coupon books they used in which they sent in a payment with the large coupon, keeping the small stub in the book.

If you divide today's car prices by 10, do the same with houses and salary, things haven't changed that much.

But, other than the 289, this thing is a real stripper.

Best real data I could find was for 1975:

House $48,000
Median income $12,686
New car: $3,800
Min Wage: $2.10
Gas: $0.59

A new car today costs $31,252 while that 1975 car adjusting for inflation would cost $16,578.

In other words I was too low on what a car costs today --  a car was much more affordable back then than today.

Back to our regularly scheduled stripper [car].

Think you will find that the difference between 68 (this example) and almost 10 years later was allot.

Don't think a new car was any more affordable back then but all depends on what you were making. Know that by 1975 I was eligible for food stamps and government housing

First new car I think my family ever purchased (including grandparents) was in 1968 if I recall correctly.  We bought used or dad built what we needed - mom & dad worked for public agencies as did I.

But we're slipping off thread  ::)

My car was a Fleet order. but i don't have a build sheet, only my Marti Report.
San Jose built (Mid Dec 67) Non GT J code Coupe.
Wimbledon White with Parchment Bench seat,
Visibility Group, Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Selectaire Conditioner, AM radio, Heavy Duty suspension, Deluxe Belts, Deluxe Wheel Covers, 3.00:1 rear.

Unique 1 of 1 car. Just like every other car...

I have all the paperwork for that car... was in one of those dealer envelopes with everything in it, guess for dealer records.
