Original battery from 1989 GT
« on: September 27, 2010, 02:37:27 PM »
I have been requested some pictures of the original BX-58C white case battery from my 1989 GT convertible so I figured I would share them here as well.  Anyone know from what period this battery was used?  I think the stopped using it around '93 but I'm not sure.

Nelson,

Per the MCA 3rd Gen Test, the battery was used thru 1990 models.  As for the start date, it's implied that it started in 79.  I had one in my 84 SVO but it got tossed when showing in Concours.  I had to locate one later for the Unrestored class.

That is a negative on the 1979 start date on the white bottom black top batteries for 3rd generation Mustangs. 79's had a white case with a red top. Don't know whether it was the same vendor or not as I have never been able to get any credible information on that. I owned an 83 GT that had the original battery in it, but I don't remember what color the top was. I think it had a red top, but I wouldn't put a great deal of faith in that. I also thought my ex-wife was the greatest until that went belly up. 82 used a battery like the 79's. From the info I've been able to dig up, 84 was the first year for the white case black top Motorcraft batteries. I also owned a 92 F150 that had a white case black top Motorcraft original battery in it, but it was a BXT-65C and not the BXT-58C that a Mustang would use.

You may very well be correct.  I don't see any info on the 79 to 87 batteries except that all years did have a heavy duty battery option.  In 88 the capacity was raised.  There are not too many good sources to review.  I will have to take a look at the Ford Manual

87 5.0L's used the same battery as in the picture of this thread. 84 thru 86 5.0, SVO, and Turbo GT used the white case black top BXT63C.

You are correct, hopeto. If I would have gotten off my posterior and gone down the basement and looked I would have said that in the first place. My mistake.

The battery types available for 3rd generation cars would be a great addition to the MCA rules if someone could provide them.
