66 GT CONV UNDER CARRIAGE COLOUR
« on: January 11, 2011, 05:37:25 PM »
Hi All,
New to this site, look like a very helpful site and great people to chat with.
Just finishing of the body on my 66 gt conv built in Dearborn MI, date code 16J,
I wanted to find out its correct colour/paint for the under carriage, it is currently unrestored underneath and black/road grime etc
What would be a good product to use to clean it up so i can see paint markings etc?
Any help would be greatly appreciatted,

Lou :)

If it's just dirty, try something like mineral spirits.  Of course, do this in a properly-ventilated area.

Well get to scrubbing ;) taking note of each layer until you reach metal - then back up one layer

I've used 3M Wax and Silicon remover - not sure if its legal in your part of the country - and its more expensive than Charles recommendation.

Most professional paint jobbers have a device called a "Profit" machine.  It looks sort of like an old Polaroid camera.
The person from the paint store needs to come to your shop and "shoot" each layer of undercarriage paint that you uncover.
This machine digitally derrives a paint formula for the color, and downloads it to the paint store's mixing computer.

The answer to the question is out there on your car.  There really is no definite color that applies to all.  You will most likely find a range of several primer colors/shades used throughout the car.
