"Paint OK" markings 68 NJ
« on: March 05, 2011, 04:03:12 PM »
I believe something was left off during the final phase of my assembly. I've always seen "Paint OK" yellow markings on all 68's from Metuchen on the inner fender and hood to cowl area. Did all cars receive this marking or was this applied at random?

All NJ cars would have originally had the paint inspected (as well as other inspections) and stamps placed in the typical locations. Yes one could have been mis-stamped but more likely it was rubbed at some point and the ink didn't remain. These stamps are pretty delicate.

For that plant and year there should be  a number of different stamps and in many locations. Normally you will see a PAINT O.K. and a BODY PAINT stampings  (top line) on the cowl as well as fenders and hood

Inspectors can be identified by their number or name and if the inspector that shift was a fill in guy from another assignment then a stamped marked SPARE was used

Where can someone get these stampings and how do you get the correct shade of yellow?

Where can someone get these stampings

You make them or have someone that has the correct ones for 68 stamp them for you at a show. IF you make them make sure to make them smaller than the original stamp you find on the car since the expansion and slippage of the original application makes the resulting ink stamp larger than the rubber stamp ;)

how do you get the correct shade of yellow?

You match or mix to get the right color. Have found some rattle cans that are very close IMHO

I don't have an extensive collection of photos and examples like Jeff, but I have recorded all that I have seen (on original cars) for the past several years.  The majority have been Metuchen, when was your car assembled and I'll check what I have.

Here is a picture of 7T01C186356, the stamp used is typical of '67 and '68's from the Metuchen plant.  BALON was working there in both years.  This particular car was stamped on both the driver's side and passenger side of the cowl and both D/S and P/S fender aprons.  Most common from the small sample I have is the passenger side cowl and both fender aprons.  Most of my examples also are stamped on the fender aprons and not the fender themselves in 67-68.  I have seen both ways.  The stamp I have closest to your build date is "PAINT O.K VENTRIGLIA", but I also have BALON before and after your build date.  Danny

Thanks for the photo. I have a feeling the yellow won't show up so well on my sunlit gold color but not sure. I'd like to put these marks on mine but I don't have the stamps.

Here is a sample of the contrast - not Sunlit gold but sort of close

Are there any other PAINT OK stampings besides the cowl area and the 2 fenders? Jeff mentioned a stamping on the hood too, I've yet to see one of those.

I did not overlook puting the paint quality stamps on your car. As I told you several times, I do not add assembly line marks to a mustang; I only duplicate what I find or see as proof being on the car. Your car had no proof of who were the paint quality inspectors or where they applied their stamps. Show me proof and I will happlily put them on.

It is very unlikely that the fender quality stamps would match the cowl area stamps as the hood/fender inspection was not done in the same area and where the body was inspected. (The hood/fenders were painted in a different area and had different inspectors.) I have seen more hood quality stamps on 65-66 mustangs, but have seen at least 1 on a 67 (2010 VA Beach National show). Have not seen any yet on a 68.

Regards,
Pete Morgan

Just so you can say you've seen one :)

You can make out the top line but the inspector didn't get the stamp flush so the name is not there

I guess considering what hoods the vast majority of 68 NJ cars I see have I shouldn't be surprised  ;)
