Hood Hinge Date Codes
« on: December 14, 2009, 10:17:16 PM »
I've got an extra set of 65-66 hood hinges, one is stamped 6 1 3 and the other 6 2 3. I assume those are date codes? If so, how are they coded? Oddly, the ones on my car, which I assume are originals, have nothing stamped on them.

Thanks,
Dave

Same format as fenders and other sheet metal.  6 1 3 would mean June 1, 3rd shift.  No year designation with those codes.

Thanks Charles, I was thinking it was the sheet metal scenario. What about the ones without any stamping? Did they not start stamping these until later or possibly I just have a set that didn't get stamped?

I don't recall seeing any without date stamps.  Maybe the stampings are faint on yours or filled with paint?

Hey Charles,

What does the letter mean at the end of the stampings?  Some sheet metal has it, some doesn't

Thanks, I'll look carefully again. I bead blasted them followed by a clear coat many years ago so they're not filled with paint but perhaps very faint.

More hinge date code questions.....

Still looking for an original set for my March 66 SJ car. I see a lot with the sheet metal type date codes already mentioned in this thread but also see a lot with codes like "OB9202" or simply "SKD". Does anyone know how to decode these? Were different date code formats more common to certain plants?

Thanks,
Dave

Think we would need to know what panels and then the stamping to help. Yes some panels got some different panels - but comparing apples to apples may help out more.

Some coding  may suggest replacement parts/panels

Thanks Jeff, don't think I was very clear...I'm referring to hood hinge date codes and the ones that have sheet metal type date codes (6 1 3) vs. the ones with other formats like "OB9202" or "SKD.

Based on my observations, the 'OB' style hinges came later, like starting in '66 sometime.  Don't recall seeing anything other than the fender style date format on hood hinges for 64.5-65.

Thanks Charles, any idea how to decode the "OB" format?
