Title: Setting up a a/c system
Post by: preaction on November 25, 2016, 06:22:41 PM
I'm just reassembling an original system and am trying to draw a vacuum and its working but how long should the  system hold 30'' of vacuum, 10 minutes- an hour, or should it hold indefinitely ?

If the system has been open for years I like to pull a vacuum for an hour before charging. It should hold overnight if you pull a vacuum and close the valves going to the vacuum source. Great test of the system and your gauge connections.

+1

Humidity and moisture saturate the insides the condenser, hoses and evaporator units when they are open to the atmosphere. Pulling vacuum (scientifically) lowers the boiling point of the water (moisure) so the longer you leave it under vacuum before charging it, the better the removal of all the moisture. Picture boiling a pot of water dry on a stove top. It isn't a "fast" process, but eventually the water all disappears as it boils away.

I have a York compressor and don't seem to be able to locate the filler plug for a York in the service manual with the compressor mounted on the engine is the filler plug the bolt head in the center and top of the compressor ? It does show how to make the dip stick for both compressors though but only shows the filler for the Tecumseh.

Thanks Richard.

I failed to mention, NEVER REMOVE THE PLUG BOLT WHEN SYSTEM HAS A CHARGE OR PARTIAL CHARGE!!!
I forget how I learned this exactly, but let's say it wasn't because I was WARNED about it! (though if you wish to suddenly remove ALL of the Refrigerant and accompanying oil, it is a quite effective way to accomplish the task  ;D
