Title: 67-68 styled steel wheel trim rings
Post by: 67gta289 on February 26, 2017, 02:21:04 PM
While going through my collection of 67 (and possibly 68) SS trim rings, I found one NOS and a few other used ones that still had visible ink stampings, as shown in the attached pictures.  Part # C7OA-1210-A

Looking at the 67 MPC, the 1007 wheel assembly C7ZZ-1007-B styled steel wheel uses the C7ZZ-1210-A trim ring.  The trim ring entry lists a size of 15-3/8" OD x 11-15/16" ID.  No reference to C7OA-1210-A.

The 65-72 conglomerated MPC concurs with the 67, and adds a C8ZZ-1210-B as 15-3/8" OD x 12" ID (1/16" larger than 67) x 2" wide (the 67 width was not identified).  In the description contains a reference to C8OA-1210-B.

Also going from the way back memory cells I seem to recall that the 67 ring was fully polished, while 68 had a lightly brushed finish.  Can anyone confirm, correct, or clarify that memory?  If brushed, was it brushed along the edge parallel with the tire as well as the 2" wide surface?

My interim conclusion is that:

1. C7ZZ-1210-A = C7OA-1210-A = polished
2. C7ZZ-1210-B = C8OA-1210-B = brushed

Thanks, John

Yes indeed the 68 ring has a brushed inner surface. In 69 Ford went back to a all polished trim ring. The C8 rings are tough to find and I could used some good ones.

I think we have concluded the ORIGINAL and perhaps early service replacements have ink stamping. Later Service Replacements have paper tags and so far, every later PAPER TAG version I have had my hands on ARE NOT THE SAME WIDTH (not as tall as when side-by-side on a table). I just aquired 2 more original ink stamped trim rings and once again, they are a perfect match.
The largest problem with these later service replacement rings is they do not look right on the original 5.5 inch wheels. They look to be correct for 66 wheels, like all Ford did was to combine the manufacturing and simply put different paper tags onto them :(

Back again... I had time to measure the widths and my original 1967 versions are 1/4" wider than the NOS parts I had picked up.  I would call the 67 at 2-1/4" while the 68 is 2".

I suspect that from a service perspective Ford felt that the 2" wide version was sufficient?

Here is a picture comparing the 67 version on the left at 2.25" wide (deep), and the 68 (and NOS) version at 2" wide.

I am looking for trim rings for my signature car. Based on this thread, 1967 styled steel trim rings should be 2-1/4" deep. While WCCC list trim rings for 1967 Cougars as 1-3/4" deep. Is this discrepancy attributed to a Mustang vs. Cougar detail? I would like to make sure I am looking for the correct depth trim rings.

Thanks, Mark.
