I need to know what finish a 1970 Dearborn Mach1 steering gear box finish is? I have searched the site and sure I have over looked it! ???Thanks!!

Natural cast iron main body with brighter machined surfaces. Nice fresh new bare metal cover. Believe the plug at the end was zinc plated. I use darkened cover retaining bolts.
Only question is did 70 Dearborn black out the top (messy black lacquer applied with a big brush producing runs of paint down the sides, that year, plant and time period. Currently I don't think judging requires it but talking about originally. Let me see if I have any pictures that show

Thanks Jeff pictures would be great!!

They wont be pretty :)
Forgot
Bare steel ID tag, Vent and nut at the top of the main body appear to have been zinc plated

But if doing gearbox concours correct the whole top gets blacked out anyway as their is a note about this in the assembly manual. I have a steering gearbox from a 69 mustang that was parted out after it got wrecked with only 1000 mi. on it & some black paint is also on the shaft & rag-joint top area also.

I have some pictures here you can see if you scroll down the page of what a restored steering box should look like. This is copied from originals and NOS units I have and duplicates as close as possible the finishes.

So you believe that all 70 Deaborns were blacked out? Asking since I could not find any that confirmed that. Not saying it hadn't been cleaned off at some point in the ones I have pictures of

How about a 69 GT 350 Steering Gear Box finish, would it be the same? Mine was built in Dearborn on 1/8/1969

Steering box metal finishes (minus the black out detail) were pretty standard through 65-70 all plants since they were done at other common sites and shipped to the car assembly plants . Paint marks and those details will vary by year, application and locations
