Title: 65 exhaust donuts?
Post by: ChrisV289 on March 04, 2017, 10:49:54 AM
What were the original donuts made out of? I've seen steel for sale and other materials. My friend's shop has some made out of asbestos. And what would be the best to install.

Use the steel ones. I've used other materials, I assume asbestos, but those seemed to fall apart over time. The "doughnut" was used to compensate for different exhaust manifold castings and different exhaust pipe fittings. There was a compound that you could used to seal the connection better but I haven't seen it in a while and can't remember its name (although Gun-Gum come to mind, but it dried hard).

Agree with Jim regarding steel gasket "donuts".  However, the fiber gaskets definitely make tightening up the H-pipe a little easier since there is a little bit of flex as the exhaust manifold and H-pipe seal.

In addition, you need to carefully inspect the exhaust manifold flange for any damage (ask me how I found out - yes it was the hard way :) ).  Upon close inspection, my drivers's side exhaust manifold had a broken stud at some point in it's life and when they drilled and machined out the broken stud they ever so slightly enlarged the flange that seals against the H-pipe.  As a result, the fiber style exhaust gaskets didn't seal and burned right up (and steel ones didn't effectively seal / fix the problem either).  Provided you have a clean and undamaged flange - either exhaust manifold gasket will work just fine.

Regards,

Ron

The originals were asbestos.

So I got a set of steel donuts but for some reason they do not fit between the studs. Are these the wrong ones? Ad set for 289.

They are for a 390 or 428.
Did you ever think of downloading this http://squarebirds.org/Manuals/1965/1965-72FordPartsTextCatalog/
It would be your own 75 MPC (second time today I recommended this).

No, cause I didn't know this existed.  Plus I am doing searches on ebay for exhaust donut for 289 65 Mustang and assume the seller would have the part listed correctly.

It's easy to miss. I did a search, I've listed and recommended the website 10 times in the last year.
