Title: Underbody Primer Question - 66 San Jose
Post by: 1966KGT on March 13, 2017, 11:40:31 AM
10/65 SJ, 66K GT, manual trans. was the primer sprayed on the bottom of these cars supposed to be designed not to be top coated? Is the primer that is listed in some posts going to be sufficient to replace it with no topcoat?

Topcoat techniques were developed well after your and my car went down the assembly line. That being said, what color is the current primer on the underside of your car? I have two mid Oct 65 San Jose cars to compare.

There are allot of threads discussing this. Would stress that the product was not the run of the mill pre-paint primer which would rust through and needed a top coat but an epoxy primer sealer that did not need a top coat - the reason they used it

Hundreds if not thousands of restorers have had no reported problems associated with its use on restorations though, in some cases, some have formed or collect a white chalky look after a number of years. Not sure if they used the Ditlzer or other produce or if its related to how the cars are stored or other unknown condition

FYI the product right out of the can will rarely if ever match what was originally applied and if you have read the other threads you will see that there were two slightly different colors applied depending on the location
