battery shield color

I located a used D4 battery shield for a 1970 Group 27 battery.  It's faded to a gray color on the inside, brownish black on the outside.  Was the D0 originally black or a brown/black color color? Would the proper finish look be flat or semi-gloss?  Thanks, Adam

As a member, you should go to the LIBRARY section of Concours Mustang Forum and look up the articles for your 70 Mustang. Just a couple items down the list, you will find an article on Battery Shields. See if that helps you answer the question. If nothing else, you will learn a few things about "Correctness" and how to identify the "right stuff" for your car.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.  At a $150 for "near correctness" vs $1,000 for a correct battery shield and $ not falling out of my pockets, near correct will have to do.

They were originally both pretty much the same color - since they were made out of the same/similar material. Of course batches might have varied a little (very little IMHO) from batch to batch. Age, the elements, sun exposure, heat and other things can effect what they look like today.

The original outer surface would have been very smooth out of the pressurized mold which would have look on the shinny side in the sun before all the scratches and handling started.

Think there is at least a couple of heat shield threads in addition to the article in the library on this site. At least I think so - have posted the pictures and information so many times over the years on different forums

 Thanks for the input on the finish.  I didn't know that Marcus had done an article on the battery shields, so reviewing that helped.  I love his attention to detail.  Thanks for the help!

Not easy to find in good condition - sold my last one to Scott (sah62) who was going to look into reproducing some.

A friend  made a run of maybe 10 of these maybe 20 years ago on a prototype machine. Might be an interesting project for someone with some time, skill and access to a 3D printer - just for fun. I've got enough to do :)

True - every once in a while I dig into this again to see if the tooling costs have become more reasonable. It would still be a pretty expensive project.

Back when I was thinking (well a little more than thinking) of doing the C7 version in the 80's= early 90's I was going to use aluminum for the mold - meant that the molds would wear out much quicker and lose detail also quicker but figured I wasn't going to make 700- +

Sure everything is more expensive but then again I would only planning on using local people not anywhere in South East Asia

Yes the guy has been posting over on the Boss site for a year or so now as the process has been progressing. Appears to be a truthful reproduction though have not yet held one in my had to look at

Yours is the C7 version, correct through the 69 model year. The D0OB version had yet to be reproduced for the 1970-73 models. The C7 version had been available for a while now in reproduction, though in more of a black color (not green/grey as various originals seem to appear on some models)

Armond, I was just talking to Ed Meyer about these heat shields this past week. He suggested that the C7 shield used on Mustangs was originally trimmed along the trailing edge right around where the engineering number can be seen in your picture. Ed said that the long, untrimmed version was used on Fairlanes and Torinos. Ed's info is consistent with Marcus' article. Are you sure that the one you have is a factory-installed original part?
