trunk mat - how to tell if it was original or not
« on: September 24, 2016, 10:49:27 PM »
Like the title says how can you tell an original trunk mat vs. a reproduction.

I'm researching 71-73 Mustang's that were exported to Japan and among the unique items on them it seems that many of them have trunk mats regardless of body style. What I am having a tough time trying to figure out is if these mats are original or reproductions.

All the cars have what is called an "accessory packaging" option which I'm not sure what it includes but I'm starting to think that the trunk mat is part of that package.

Anyone have any insight on trunk mats?  If you happen to know anything about the accessory packaging that would be great too!

Thanks!

This may be a hard one to get a confirmed answer on.  Export is somewhat of a gray area in the restoration world in my opinion.  Possibly post a picture of the mat and see if you can locate any markings on it possibly on the back side.  This will help others help you.  I have my opinion on the "accessory package" for export, but I am not sure if it would include a trunk mat.

There is a part number stencilled on the back of the original mat in my '70 Cougar.  I would think that would be common practice across the lines over the years.  Maybe?
