64.5 accent stripe
« on: December 22, 2016, 09:00:49 PM »
One of the issues I am not clear on is the statement on the judging rules for 64.5  "Non-GT without quarter chrome trim should have painted accent stripe" I understand the 1/16 stripe but I cannot find mention of the rocker moldings anywhere on the judge sheet. The question I have is can a coupe have the accent stripes without rocker or quarter moldings?

The accent group required that no quarter ornaments be present and rocker moldings installed, in addition to the painted on stripe.

I'm puzzled about the use of GT and 64.5 Mustangs.  Didn't the GT's get introduced mid-year of the 1965 (March 1965) production run?  There never was a 64.5 GT....

you are correct...no 64 1/2 GT's. the rules are written to cover 64 1/2 to 66 models.

I am trying to decide what to do. When I blasted the car down to metal there was no evidence that it ever had quarter or rocker modeling's so I did not drill holes for either assuming it did not have them when it left the factory.

Are you sure the quarter panels and rockers are original?

One of the rocker, drivers side, was pop rivet on so it was not original to the car. The car had been painted at least 2 times but the quarters and other rocker appeared to be original, all the right spot welds, sealers and sound det inside and out. I am going to guess that it had rocker moldings and when the one rocker was replaced the owner decided not to replace the moldings to save $.  Only thing is I should have seen where the holes where welded in on the passenger side and I did not.

I'd say then that this explains the absence of rocker panel moldings.  If you're going with the accent stripe, then it would be best to install the moldings.
