Id/info on "smog motor"
« on: March 21, 2017, 05:07:17 PM »
Hi Guys

(not a big EARLY car guy)...........I sold a 289 to guy this week as a core to rebuild and pulled THIS (attachement below) out to get at the other motor!

Can you shed light on WHAT it is??   My guess is it is an early 1968 J code motor from a DSO with smog.   Heads are 7L2 and 7K31.  Engine tag shows 289 C 67 -14 and a code of 250A which is a 4V.

What started out as "I can provide you a cheap core" turned into this motor is the wrong date code/that motor is incomplete etc etc.     I don't care-but IF someone needed this it would be better to go to a resoration IMO.

With thanks
Mark

A J code 1968 engine was a 302-4V. Cylinder heads have a "4V" cast under the valve covers. True thermactor smog cylinder heads for the 302-2V or 302-4V, have individual drilled and tapped holes for the smog tubes.

289 smog heads do not have 4 drilled and tapped holes for smog tubes. Used same smog design as 1966-67 California.

You will need to get more numbers or better pictured to ID this. Not 289 heads as Scott said, looks like later smog style at the backs of the heads.

I believe that those heads had the single injector hole at the right hand front and left hand rear for the air inputs.
289 smog heads do not have 4 drilled and tapped holes for smog tubes. Used same smog design as 1966-67 California.
Ford used the four hole per head thru out 1966 in California for all 289 engines (except the HP which was exempt) and into 1967. Sometime in mid 1967 production (Jan-Feb 67?), the 289 heads changed to the single input port. As soon as the exemption for smog tests for cars built before 1974 was put into effect, the four hole types were pugged, or swapped for non-smog types.

Thanks Jim, I did not know about the change in 1967.

Where do I apologize  ????   And for what - being too old to see !  (or to lazy to look closer)

This is a 1978 Motor. 7K24  but a D8VE-6015-A3A Z   Makes sense that I would have a mexican block from a performance guy knowing to keep it ! (now I have to deal with it)

P.S.  Shouldn't have trusted the engine tag on the intake.

Nope - no such thing as a "DSO with smog" in 68. Since the requirements went federal that year. Instead I would offer that they were from a vehicle with a manual transmission. Those required a Thermactor system while the none manual cars got the IMHO emission system

The single connection per head verses the multiple was a change from what Ford referred to as external or internal

It maybe a "franenstein" too !!    Later Mexican block with early componets.    Seems the 4V intake is earlier as is the Autolite distributor housing BOTH late 1967 dates.

It needs to come off my 1250LB engine stand !   (gave the guy a stand with the other engine for $400)

Early heads have smaller coolant passages in the intake gaskets, a little bit of work and one could adapt. Also, later heads (late 76-up) do not have adjustable valve train. My dates could be off but it's 76 to 77 when the change occurred
