Cylinder head sequence number? 1968 390

Hi guys,

Got my motor back from the rebuild shop and so ready to drop it in!   While going over dates and such, I'm seeing a stamping number on each head on the ends that are actually sequenced 116037 and 116038 respectively.  This is the original  motor to the car and original C8AE-H heads too.  What are those numbers?  Sequence numbers or something?   Just curious.....

Cheers

Dave

Either one the same as your VIN? When Ford started out stamping all engines with a VIN workers sometimes would stamped the number on the heads rather than the block at some factories.  Have two with different numbers might just be a screw up. Thinking that might be the first possibility since they are 6 digit starting with  a "1"

Another possibility is a rebuilder stamping them for identification during a rebuild of the engine

Most likely a identification number stamped by the shop doing the most recent rebuild or one done previously . It is typically done to make sure a head goes back to the right customer.  When Ford metal stamped a identification number on a head it was a VIN derivative and it would be on one head only.

Could be the sequential part of the VIN, let us know....

A12pilot:
Thanks guys.  Nope.... not the sequence of my VIN which is on the block ending 123426 as well as the transmission.   Engine builder says he didn't stamp it,  so not sure. My 390 was the only Ford FE in the shop. I know they are the original heads and never rebuilt either.  Weird how they are sequenced only one number away from each other
