65 SJ C Code Fastback Gas Tank
« on: October 10, 2010, 09:05:25 PM »
I have removed the gas tank from my Nov built 65 SJ C Code Fastback and there there is a healthy dose of sound deadener on the sides and front of the tank. There also seems to be Caspian overspray on the tank prior to the sound deadener going over top.

Is this consistent with other examples?

There were some early cars that had sound deadener applied to the sides of the gas tank.  If I remember right, something about the internal design, which was corrected during '65 production.  I wouldn't expect to see paint over spray on the deadener though.  Maybe Jeff has some documentation on this.

Charles:

It appears as if there is some of the original paint under the deadener. Would that make sense?

Don't recall seeing the sound deadener added to any original SJ built car - maybe this practice ended before production stated there.

As for "original paint" being under the sound deadener - something sounds fishy ;) since there should not be any paint on the gas tank

Wouldn't make sense at all.  Possibly a factory re-work, but I doubt they would be so sloppy to get over spray on the tank on a touch-up.  Other option is either  dealer touch-up or maybe some previous damage from sometime.

Thanks for the pictures - checked my pictures and I found 1 SJ car that appears that there was a single narrow pass down  the side of the tank. Appears to be a limited (short period of time) practice. Will look for more examples - car I found did no come with a full VIN to place it in production for us

I vote for dealer or PO

One more photo of the front of the tank if this helps. Fuel sending unit appears to be original as it also was coated with the deadener.

Looks like the whole tank was blacked out before the undercoating was added - best I can tell from  the posted picture ;)

Sorry, not the best photo. Only the front portion has deadener, the remainder was dark from washing/cleaning (it was wet). The front and sides had deadener, the remainder of the tank was natural metal.

I'll try it again with a photo of the dry tank.

Something else to consider is that gas tanks were usually date-stamped, like other sheet metal.  It is usually on the bottom of the flange somewhere, obscured by strip caulk.

I don't recall how to read the date stamp but I think this means it is a 67 tank?
