65 Coupe Headliner color question
« on: December 04, 2010, 02:48:38 PM »
I am starting restoration of an original San Jose built 65 K coupe built August 12 1946. The car is Poppy red (orange) with black standard interior code 26, black standard vinyl. However the car has the remains of a white headliner. I removed the glass and judging by the original paint and everything looking all original as compared to the 100`s of others I`ve seen, it is the original headliner. Is it possible for a black interior car to have had a white headliner is my question for the experts?
Thank you And Happy Holidays to all.

My car was built 10/29/64 in SJ and has interior code 28 which is ivy gold and the headliner color in that is like an off white color.  I believe it to be original to the car.

What is your interior code (from the door tag)?

I have seen lots of '65's (probably earlier production) with white headliners regardless of the interior color.

Jeff, like I stated in the question, it is code 26, black vinyl standard interior.

It was towards the end of '64, maybe around December or so that colored headliners were used.  An August '64 car most likely would have originally had a white headliner, regardless of interior color.

I have had 3 64.5 in my life. 2 were my dads and 1 mine, all had white headliners. Granted 1 was white/black interior but the other two were blue and red respectively.

Somewhat along the same topic but was the windlace also white as well on these cars in early production regardless of the interior color?? I distinctly remember when my dad first got the car in 92 it had white/off white windlace and he changed it to the light ivy color since it looked out of place next to the dark ivy green...

In the pictures I have the windlacing  does not match the headliner unless its a white interior car
