68 Trunk seal
« on: July 02, 2011, 08:58:28 PM »
I have been having trouble with my 67 High Country Special trunk lid seal. The HCS is like a 68 Shelby convertible trunk lid. I installed a Scott Drake seal and could not get even close to closing. Today I installed a Danial Carpenter seal. It is better but I still can not get it to latch. Ideas?

Is this an original deck lid?

Yes it is the original. I have done 9 or 10 projects never had this problem before, but first fiberglass one.

The reason I asked is that if it had been a repop maybe it was laid up thicker. My drake gasket is a tight fit but the decklid does close. Waiting for it to compress a bit though.

Adjust your trunk latch a bit (move it up) until the rubber compresses.

Thanks Dave,
That is what I am doing now. The lid is about 1/2 higher than the end caps and I doubt I get that much compression. I may have to go back to the body shop for some adjustment. Marty

Marty, that is kind of the nature of those trunk lids (the fastbacks are a little better. The DC gasket is the best repop one but even with the OEM gasket the lid will be difficult to close. Adjust it till it catches without major pressure and every couple weeks take it down 1/8" at a time. Even when properly compressed the lid will sit higher than the end caps. I have taken points off for overworking the fiberglass when everthing lines up flush

Thanks Tim,
That makes me feel a lot better. At this point I will be happy to get it down to where it was when I bought it.
