1964 1/2 fuse block missing connector?
« on: July 22, 2013, 02:39:14 PM »
Hi All, so while cleaning up the electrical in my June built 64 coupe, I found that the radio fuse has only one connection?, meaning only one clip is holding the fuse in place. Can anyone tell me how this is supposed to be? I'm guessing the other clip broke or fell off but there is no connection or wiring behind the block as you can see in the pics, (looks to be the radio fuse). Any help would be greatly appreciated. And , I have not had the electric tested up until now. I'm just now trying the wipers, heater, etc... so I ofcourse never fooled with the radio. Thanks!

I've heard about this "feature". What the conventional wisdom maintained was the output side of the fuse (fuse tap clip and lead) used for the radio was only put in the fuse block when the radio was used. The wiring diagram for 64 Mustangs (Assembly Manual) does not have radio wiring included but the extension lead is shown on the radio installation page as p/n C4ZB-18A919-A. For 65, it's similar, there's a triple tap add-on lead, C5ZB-14A318-B, identified as an "accessory feed", used with an extension lead, C5ZB-18A919-A, from the triple tap to the radio. For 66, the triple tap lead is part of the fuse block, the extension is the same.
Used is about your only source if you're lucky enough to find one.

No, you are missing a black wire with a fuse clip that loads from the bottom.  That black wire is the radio power lead, IIRC.

If you need one of these wires and clip, contact me and I'll clean it up as best as I can and provide it at a very nominal price.

No? I think I detailed what the "black wire" was right down to the part number. It was added for use with a radio. Based on the several 65 triple tap and the extension cables I've seen, the 64 type should have the C4ZB-18A919-A part number marked several times on the wire along with FOMOCO and SX, the manufacturer. There may be a part number anomaly, it "may" be marked C4DB- (or C3DB-) as the assemble was first used on Falcons and then used on Mustangs.
A correction, the 65 extension is marked C5DB-18A919-A.

I'm a little confused.  ???  So a wire and metal connector, like others already in the fuse block, is used for a radio and it is the power lead going straight to the radio? The car had a radio in it when I bought it but was a Ford look-a-like AM radio from that time period. I do not know if the car had a rado in it from the factory. Either way, I have a nice restored, correct, AM radio for the 64 and want it to be able to use this fuse. What options do I have at this point? I have another lead from a 65 fuse block that I can use. Thanks for all your replies!!

I did find this in a search. Is this what you are describing that I need?   "Wiring 65/66 accessory feed, connects from accy 3 way feed wire to accy, C5DB 18A919-A SX FoMoCo, 19" long"

The part number you reference is the extension used between the triple taps and the radio power in pin of both the 65 and 66 Mustangs. It has a male pin at one end and a female socket at the other. You want the lead with a fuse clip at the end that requires the fuse block to be removed for installation. It has a single receptacle at the other end for the radio.
Just for reference, Ford uses a 0.187in dia pin and socket (vs 0.156in dia) for most of the electrical connections.

I think I understand that. I do have a fuse holder from a spare fuse block. I guess if I cannot find the correct peice I can create a new extension of wire and solder the wire into the fuse holder? Thank you for the reply! I'm guessing that the wire and fuse holder were removed in this car? Funny how the fuse is there but not connecting to anything on the bottom!! This is how I recieved the car.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a radio installed? And, if so, how is it hooked up?

Like I said, I have a couple original fuse clips with the right wires attached to it that are from a 64.5 fuse block.

If I remember the radio was hooked up directly to the fuse block elsewhere. Never tested anything , went straight into the resto.  Midlife, I sent you a PM about the wire. Thanks to all!
