How to ID Original 1969-1970 Front Bumpers
« on: November 08, 2013, 09:46:34 PM »
Put together a quick reference guide on how to tell the difference from an original date coded front bumper versus a reproduction front bumper.  If anyone sees or knows anything different, or has additional information, let me know know....

Very useful information. But, I have a question. In your full example at the bottom, it says, "Day, month, shift information". Wouldn't the 11  1203, translate into Day=11, Month=Dec, which would be December 11th, '69, 3rd shift?  Instead of November 12th, '69, 3rd shift? Like you have it.

Just wanting to know for corrective purposes.

Your correct....should be written as month, day, shift.  I made the change so it reads more correct now.  Good eye on that....

Very useful info. The front bumper on our 69 Mach 1,  I bought from a vendor in Charlotte back in 1985. It had a tag on the inside that said it was an original. I will check it out when I return home this afternoon.

Attached are a few photos of the bumper at the tag area. It looks like an original service part. The reason I say service part is because of a sticker that has been stuck inside the bumper since it was purchased in '85. The shape of the contours at the tag area looks like an original.  But, there are no stamped letters or numbers inside the bumper.

I attached a photo of the sticker also.

Let me know your thoughts.

It certainly looks like a Ford bumper.
Just to be clear on the date codes, these would be stamped on the inside front lip of the bumper.  So when mounted on the car, the only way you can see the date codes is with a small mirror or dental mirror in there.  Otherwise you cant see the date codes from underneath.

Looks good - I would suggest changing the wording in the bottom most illustration

Currently you have on the left "Month, day, shift information" and on the right "Year information" With the M being pointed out separately

I would leave the comment on the left side but change the right side and get rid of the separate M notation  since the M is included in the other call out with the year. With this change the right side notation instead to "Year and manufactures information" The "M" was already mentioned in the text at the top - just think it would look and flow better ;)

IF you include service replacements it might open up a can of worms and allot of different (through the year) changes

Yes it does ;)

Now one more possible suggestion - yes the graphic artist thing again

Since you have  black box around the whole document why no thin black boarder around the pictures and call outs? This will ad more definition to each, make them "more important" in the eye of the viewer and will help the view focus on those details

Just a suggestion see how it looks to you. ;)

Do you think it worth while to include a length measurement ?  I understand the reproduction bumpers come in different sizes and a measurement may be helpful to some ?  Measuring the ones on my car;  Front 68" and the rear 65.5".  Measuring the bumpers laying flat on the ground would be a more accurate meethod.  Brian
