How do you simulate steering wheel wood grain on a 69 mustang?

I know there is a trick, I haven't been able to find it yet.

A friend of mine that is an artist at that stuff uses several different coarse grits of sandpaper and then uses them lightly to cause scratching/graining in a way that he thinks looks right.
You do not just sand the whole thing like it is a wood project. It's more like using paint strokes to cause an effect but with sandpaper

I've used a knife blade to replicate the grain.  Takes some time, but turns out nice.
