Title: 1970 Dearborn CJ Shaker Hood Stripes
Post by: 1970 Snake on January 14, 2018, 11:40:01 PM
I have seen a number of different hood stripes for the 1970 mustangs, some with a large gap between the back of the stripe and the back end of the hood and some with a small gap. I have also seen discussions on 428 numbers in the stripe and "no" 428 numbering in the stripe. What would have been correct for Sept 4/69 Dearborn built??

Don't have any very early unrestored cars to offer as an example of what a car from Dearborn and time period would have originally had.

My September 18th Dearborn had no number in the stripes, same as my October and November cars.

Thanks for the input guys, my car was repainted in the mid to late 70's and was not paint the original Calypso Coral (see pics what where they thinking) so I have no idea what the original shaker hood had to offer as to the strips. I like the style of stripping rayms69 has posted a picture of and it has the back of the strip close to the back edge of the hood. So to that end have decided to replicate that style right or wrong. Like most think the 428 looks a lot cooler than no 428.

I've had two 1970's with Shaker Hoods and stripes.  One I still own (repainted, never restored) is a 1970 Mach 1 with 351 M-Code and the build date was 10/14/69.  It has the solid black stripe and built in New Jersey.  The other was a 1970 428 R-Code with a build date of 11/05/69 and built in Dearborn with the solid hood stripe.  Neither car had the "351" or "428" call-out numbers in the stripe.

I also had a cousin who returned from Vietnam in the fall of 1969 and purchsed a new 1970 M-Code Shaker Mach 1 off the dealers lot with the solid stripe, no numbers.

I was going to college back then and had a new 1970 Grabber Mustang (F-Code, no hood stripe).  I was a big 1970 fan and looked at all of them I saw back then.  I really don't remember seeing the call-out numbers in the hood stripes back then.   In the years since it seems like most Mach 1's I see at cruises and shows have the numbers in the stripes.  I like the look, just don't remember seeing them like that in the fall of 1969 when the 70's came out.

Yes that seems to be the issue, that it depends allot of when and where the car was built as to how the stripes were made and which were supplied and installed.  The OP was looking for examples of every early Dearborn examples making it more of a challenge over a year ago.

Guess as we get to starting a main thread focusing on running changes like we have for the early years this subject will need to be one of those if not before as a stand alone thread.

Thanks, Jeff.  I looked at the links to the 428 Cobra Jet site and didn't remember being involved in that discussion 7 years ago.  (LOL)  Old age is getting me quicker than I thought.  ;)

Interesting because I have seen two unrestored August Metuchen M code shaker cars and they both had gaps with solid black 351 in the gaps.

4/69 ???? I don't think they built 70 Mach1s until mid 7/69 and didn't go on sale till September. Heres my 3/10/70 Dearborn built 70 351C Mach 1. I am the second owner and have owned since 9/73. Original paint unrestored with white out lined call out numerals. I have seen original 428 cars this way too. I worked at a Ford dealer in 69-70 and I remember Q code cars came with solid black numerals and the R code ram air cars came with the white out lined numerals. But not to say that is the gospel.

I have extra 428 repo Hood emblems if needed. I also produced custom flat black 428 emblems using 3M Matt wrap material. I have an add on the 428 Cobra Jet forum. I don’t visit here much. Rick
