Title: 375798 Clip for 65's
Post by: ChrisV289 on January 21, 2018, 11:46:32 AM
Anyone know what 375798 clip looks like?  It is suppose to hold the trans mod line to the block.  From the assembly manual it looks like a J clip but not sure if it is coated or not.  Jim your spreadsheet does not give any info on it, just lists it as clip special.

Chris,
Sorry, that's it. I can add a probable shape from the picture in the 64-65 Chassis Assembly Manual (ref AM005 pg22 & 30), "J", and probable mounting hole from the bolt's size, 3/8 (42772-S8), but that's it. I have not found any other documentation.

Chris : Part of the problem here, that there is no info on this clip, is that it was not serviced (ie not available as a Service Part). I have attached the illustration from the "1965 Only" Parts and Accessories Catalog ; don't know if it shows it any better than what you have. The key here is the "star" shown by the Part Number. I have also attached what the "star" symbol means.
In the drawing, it appears that this clip bolts into the rear of the head. Does this make sense (I am not that familiar with 65 AT applications, and 1966 and '67 have a totally different clip arrangement) ?
As far as the "finish", a "Special" designation (usually S100) can designate anything not described by the other finishes, materials, etc. which leaves it "wide open". For this application, I would think it ought to be at least rubber coated, and possibly even a "spring steel" type with the purpose of reducing vibration, rattling, etc.

Just some thoughts.

Yes it is a J shaped clip . Unfortunately the C6 version is different . I have those.  I remember seeing the C4 clip bare steel. I tried to look around to see if I had one because I will be working on a 66 GT350 with a C4 in the near future and will need one myself but no luck so far. If I stumble across one I will post.

Preliminary measurements:
Visual - a "J" clip, appears to be a gun metal blue finish.
3/4 inch wide.
1 7/16 inch long, to the bend.
1/2 inch from the bend to the tip of the "J".
1/8 inch outward bend of 30-40deg at the "J".
0.416 inch dia mounting hole.
3/8 inch radii centered at the hole end.
0.036 inch thick spring steel, it does not bend easy.
The bolt is 42772-S8, 3/8-16X5/8 Hex, external tooth lock washer, "L" head marking.
After a day or in the cold parts cleaner, I'll post more. It's a bit dirty.

I've not paid allot of attention to the 65 clip and its finish.  Should have a few pictures of them in the picture collection - will take a look.

Maybe I'll dig one out and post a picture after I clean one off.  Think a local shop has about eight C4's sitting in a back room. Maybe one will be right for the 65 application and it is still attached. - need to look at a nice unrestored 67 S code there tomorrow. Going to have the camera with me anyway  ::) so might as well get a few more pictures

I've seen the clips also in what appears to be a P&O finish but will double check.  Should have a few pictures of them in the picture collection - will take a look.
Be advised that the clip is attached to the RH head of a 260 or 289 engine at the rear for the vacuum line retention, 64-65 only. It's probably one of the sources of the phrase - "Something is hung up".

Lets try this again since I posted first a 66 example  :(

Sorry guys its a tough spot to get a picture and when I took it the purpose was just to get an over all picture of the area. Chris this is the same example I've been using for your car int he past since its so clost to your car.  In any case- can barely make out the edges of the clip but its there.

So some what of a side question, because I can't tell from Bob's picture he posted, does the ground strap attach to the same bolt as the J clip or as the transmission filler tube?  Or are all three on the same bolt?

To be answered later.
Picture attached. Drawing to follow.

Chris : The Illustration I posted does not show the Ground Strap ; however, the picture that Jeff Posted just before your Reply does appear to show it being attached to the head at a different location than the clip, very possibly along with the AT Dipstick Bracket. Note that in the Illustration I attached, it does show another bolt (albeit the same hardware Part Number). Typically if it were the same bolt, the thin line showing where it goes would come from the bolt, then thru the clip and then thru the Dipstick Bracket. Since it does not appear to show this, I would say that it is not the same bolt being used.

Maybe this attachment will show the separation a little better.

Chris,
On my "relatively untouched", Oct 65, San Jose Fastback, the ground wire and transmission dip stick tube share a bolt. What the part number is will have to wait (either 42772-S8 or 20312-S36). There are three 3/8-16 tapped holes on that end of the head (the RH rear - see the LH head front for a visual representation of what I'm referring to), two are at the top and bottom of a 1 5/8 - 1 3/4 inch plug used to cover a casting (?) hole and a third closer to the center line of the engine and higher up on the head. That third one holds the 375798-S clip. The upper tapped hole of the first two around the plug, holds the shared ground wire and tube. (A MT car would have the ground wire on that upper tapped hole.)
(On a LH head, the tapped holes are used for power steering and/or A/C pumps.)

Thanks for the information. I have my friend looking for one in his shop. Might have found one yesterday but not sure yet.

Is there also a toothed washer for the ground strap as well on that bolt? Looks like one on Jeff's picture.

There should be one on the firewall end and the other on the engine block side . The toothed washer is supposed to be the first thing that makes contact so as to dig into the surface for a more positive ground.

So Bob, would the order be from block to firewall, tooth washer, ground strap and then the transmission filler tube, then the bolt holding it all together?

Block to firewall? Maybe you mean ground strap wire to block/head? It should be tooth washer, ground strap, transmission filler tube then the bolt holding it all together.  Firewall side is similar. In that case the toothed washer, ground strap , then sheet metal screw holding it to the firewall. In each case the toothed washer is first against the surface that is to be grounded so it can dig into the metal better so as to get the best electrical connection .

Did this clip change in 66?  I saw a couple of examples while in Michigan but they attached to the bolt that holds the bell housing to the block...

Different clip, different routing, different side, different part number - but also not serviced. It "could" be the same clip used in 1967.

I’ve been looking for that clip for some time now.  It’s missing on my 65 Fastback.

This is what I saw in Detroit. And my friend gave me this clip but if it isn't right then the search continues.

It looks like the one I have in my hand that came of an Oct 65, San Jose build 66 GT. I need to put it back on the car. It was "restored" last month. The only reference and sketch I have is the 67 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual (AM0020 P31) that references Ford P/N 7B085. (I-6 Ford P/N is 7B096, 390 Ford P/N is 70092 - I think the 390 P/N is incorrect.) None of the 7xxx Ford part numbers are referenced in the 75 MPC.
