« on: December 28, 2017, 12:42:14 PM »
I have a 1970 Mach 1. I cant find info of what kind of seal was used around the tank to the trunk opening?

Thanks, Chris

The sealant is not documented in the 70 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual, but following what Ford had used on other years, I would recommend strip calk. I've used 3M 08578 (Black) for years on Mustangs (including 1969, close).
I also recommend that you get a set of Mustang Assembly Manuals for your car.

The sealant is documented in the 70 Mustang Body Assembly Manual (AM0031, pg 76), and is shown as a 3/8 wide strip calk.

Is it gray which is hard to get other than from AMK Products, or is it readily available black?
Grey for under the fenders was a poor decision back in the day with a black engine bay.
An eye sore when it squishes out, whereas black would go unnoticed unless you looked for it.

Almost black grey or just black is what was used at the gas tank, under front fenders and elsewhere originally. Material can become whitish and chalky when exposed over the years to the elements. There is at least one prior thread with a discussion on the stuff here on the site

Most just use the 3M black strip chalking. Take two or three stripes work them together without stretching the length then roll them together into one strip. connect multiple ones together around the opening and set the gas tank in place. Tightening the tank down with spread the chalking and create the needed seal your looking for

Same material but a few examples from some other years (67 and 69 in these two)
