67 smog pump "air filter"
« on: October 30, 2015, 01:36:02 PM »
Does anyone have pic or a part number for the filter media that was used in the 67 air pump filter cans. I have the reproductions from NPD but never seen an original, are the NPD parts accurate ?

I have some, but the originals were oil-soaked and over time, the oil broke down the foam or "sponge-like" material. (read as NOS are no longer usable)

They appear to be a black foam. I'll have to look at them again to get you the number. Scott Drake reproductions were a blue-colored foam, is that what NPD has?

Originally it was a section of tan colored foam bonded at one end. Similar to the product used to insulate the 68-70 bypass valves.
For service pieces they were stored in a plastic bag in oil as 67gtasanjose wrote.

Service replacement filters (the assy) came without the filter element.

Think my last NOS just got tossed since it was unusable.

I would make my own out of 1/2" thick open cell foam  next time I need one

Either way you will not be able to see the filter once the filter is assembled

I realize no one will be seeing this part I ask for my education so in that rare event I see one I may be able to identify it, thanks.

Date code looks like they are from either 1974 or 1984 (or 94?), take your pick, any way, these I have and any NOS you might find will be fully unusable except for pictures.

Think the dark ones were the later service replacements. Agree that after all these years barely usable for anything - even to copy to make a replacement

Old thread, yes, but I noticed that the part number is embedded in the foam.  Pretty cool, I thought- see the picture.  And like others, this was like a Patsy Cline situation "I fall to pieces" when I started messing with it.

If you see an NOS one on ePay or other...you are buying a box.  And an oily plastic bag.  And oily cell foam pieces.

I can't find anything available, looked in all the usual places.  Must I improvise?

I did not find one but for a time, Scott Drake made them. Maybe you can find old stock of his.

Likely - Most of the time originals with any age have already dissolved as they were stored in a clear bag with an oil on them which apparently didn't help

For others this thread also covers 66 cars also since they have the same system as far as the filter "element"

It should not be a big problem to come up with a DIY alternative given the material and the closed can.
