65 bullet connectors
« on: February 14, 2014, 10:09:00 PM »
Where can I find the male and female bullet connectors in the right size (diameter and length) for 65 mustang? I've not see these sold at mustang parts places online. My radio has connectors that are too short and thin, guessing the connector was replaced but with the wrong size male bullet connector.

Any special tools to put these on?

Most bullet connectors on Fords are standard trailer connectors; some 69-70 clock connectors use the smaller bullets as do all 67-70 radio plugs.  I like this source for bullet connectors (won't match the wire colors, though):

So the standard trailer connector they show on 16 gage wire is the correct length/diameter for the 65 bullet connectors? I guess you have to cut and splice on these.

Ford used a 0.187 dia bullet connector. The other "standard" size is 0.156 dia. They are not interchangeable. There are several types that accept different size wires, usually the red insulator is for 20-20AWG, blue is for 16-18AWG, yellow is for 12-14AWG. The blue insulator size, 16-18AWG, is probably the most useful size. I got mine on e-bay.
The crimping tool may be found on Harbor Freight. DO NOT USE VICE GRIPS, it may not work and it looks "tacky".

Cool! Thanks Brant. I looked in my VCM catalog but somehow missed this.
