Title: Fender Bolts, 1967 T Bird
Post by: KevinK on August 08, 2016, 05:37:44 PM
I am looking for a source for replacement 67 fender bolts for my 67 T-Bird.  The parts book lists 378178-s2/B-412B for the bolt 5/16"-18x1".  It seems like a pretty standard bolt with '23" on the head and serrated teeth on the bottom side of the washer. I could not find it in the AMK catalog.  Any suggested sources? Thanks.

Also the nut clip is 379831-s2/MM192M

Don't know if Green Sales carries much in the way of hardware anymore.

Last option (or first for some of us) would be from a donor car. Don't know how many plants built T Birds that year and what are the original head markings but that can also be a concern when getting replacements.

The 23 with star washers (believe that is what your describing) was used on some early (65-66) Mustangs for the shock tower supports.

I believe the head style requested is a toothed (serrated) disc washer, vs. external toothed.
The ones in the picture used on the shock tower to firewall braces are 3/8-16X1.0, 377917-S2.
In my collection, I find no 5/16-18 bolts with that head marking. The majority of markings I find for that length and style are the "Sems" in a circle, and the double "ditto" (or double quote). All this "may" indicate is that bolts with that head marking were not used on Mustangs, at least made in San Jose.
As Jeff stated, start a junk yard search. To give you an expanded vehicle search, if you can determine the plant, and then determine any other Ford or Mercury cars produced at that plant, you may find more usable hardware.

Thanks for the replies. The Tbird world is not as demanding as the Mustangs so I was looking for a new replacement. Jim was correct on the style washer. This style bolt and washer seems to be present on my 67 San Jose mustang but the head markings are very slight or nonexistent. Will tray to add a photo.

I don't know about T Birds but 67 Mustang /Shelby fender bolts from SJ seem to most typically follow SEMS markings at the beginning of 67 production and transition to the the "" until the end of production.

Style of bolt and washer was used up into the 70's on Ford and Merc products. The difference is in the plating/finish and the head markings

Of course since you asked here it would be easy to predict that we would focus and mentioned the finer details.

Don't know of any other mass seller than AMK dealing with hardware. But then again I don't buy much of it

Thanks for all the feedback/input.  I guess I should have stated that I was looking for a similar replacement that is known to the Mustang world.  The head marking is my least concern but it's how the Mustang people identify their parts.

My main request are new bolts, correct bolt shaft (tapered) and very close to same washer.  I am assuming the finish was phosphate and oil. The bottom end of the bolt sticks out (upside down) at the fender well to fender attachment.

I found some close to the original but the end of the bolt is not tapered.

A typical 67 Mustang fender bolt is the same as you describe disregarding the makers mark. If there is no such place to order from for the T Birds order them from one of the many different vintage Mustang parts providers.
