« on: August 06, 2009, 10:09:00 PM »
hey guys, new to the forum, I currently restoring a 70 mach 1 0f05h199202, built 6/11/1970, does anyone know which 351 (clever/windsor) this car was born with, I heard it could be whatever the dearborn plant had at the time.

It has always been my feeling (at least back in the old days) that 1970s had a Cleveland 351......I also have heard that about what ever the plants had at the time thing, may be someone else has better info than I, but if it was mine as long as it had A 351 engine I would restore it that way espessely if its a Cleveland.....I really think the Cleveland is "more" correct for a 1970....

Wouldnt a Marti report tell you which motor is original to the car?

Being built in June, I'm pretty confident in saying they would have been out of Windsors.

the matri report just said 351-2v, but doesn't give the plant name cleveland or windsor,  tring to get the car close to a concours driver. I do have a correct date coded cleveland  may 12 '70 as a date code. also have a windsor but it was built too early july of '68. I do know all of the M codes were clevelands in 70, but when I attend the shows I see alot of H code as windsors as 1970.

So the Cleveland you have is not numbers matching? What was in the car when you got it?

I thought early on the two barrels were windsor motors, but by june of 70 you would think they would have burned through the inventory.

have you looked for the vin# on the block (thats if you think it might be the original block) drivers side back of block just below the head.

I believe right at 1968 all cars had to have thier engines and tranny's stamped with a form of the cars VIN. I'm sure it's possible that some escaped but they were supposed to be thier.

My 71 (351C) had the last 6 of the vin stamped on the pad on the back side of the block on left bank.

Both blocks I have for the 69 have stamps there too. Both windsors. The one in the car is a later model.
The one that is not in use is the right year but wrong vin.

It is accepted that 70 Mustangs came equipped with 351 Cleveland engines, both 2v and 4v. H code =351-2v and M=351-4v. An early production 70 Mustang might have come with a Windsor engine, depending on which plant it was built at.

For others viewing - that would be a Dearborn built car ;)
