Unrestored - July 71 Dearborn J code
« on: March 11, 2016, 09:16:26 PM »
Disclaimer: :) As always we need to warn that unrestored does not always mean unaltered by previous owners. Just because this car has/had a specific detail does not mean your car was built just the same. Always do your research, document your findings and make the best choice for you and your expectations.

Looking at my pictures there look to be two groups - one when the car was first put up for sale and one later after the unrestored car was made a bit prettier :( Difference in the two groups in pictures from the engine compartment should be apparent but that should explain some of the things you might pick up on.  Vin is 1F05J22143x ;)

Projected build date might be around July 1971. Mileage was reported to be 21K and 22K

Hope the sharing of these will help all of our understanding of these cars and foster some discussions.  Car has had at least one respray with the door jambs (to the weatherstrip) was done. Choose a little over a dozen pictures that others may find interesting and that might plant seeds for good discussions and/or provide some info for members with similar cars. Enjoy!!

ENGINE COMPARTMENT

E1-
Shot of the alternator splash shield attached to the passenger side frame rail under the front end

E2- Battery area. Cool original radiator hose, heater hoses, battery shield and other parts

E3- Shot of the front of the engine. Notice the Thermactor system

E4- Across the front face of the engine

E5- Battery area again with at least one change

E6- Passenger side engine compartment

E7- Some changes have been made

E8- Much cleaner and fresher now. Interesting decal/sticker/placement on the hood latch support guess the assigned worker just put it there rather than on the top surface of the radiator support. The hole in the center top of the radiator support with the bare metal left around it - haven't seen that on unrestored cars and its difficult to see if that detail is in the before pictures as bare as it is later

INTERIOR

I1- Shot of the dash and forward interior

I2- Drivers door

I3- Shot from the passenger side

I4- Glove box stuff

TRUNK

T1-

T2-

The "D1ZB" marking just in front of the trunk seal in the last photo is interesting. Is that an ink stamp on the paint? Is that common on '71s?

Good eye.   Don't recall ever seeing that before. Looks like its on the painted surface almost under the trim panel. Hate to think it was someones creative effort while prepping the car but might just be dust in a stamping in the panel and just the right angle to show it

Closer look

I know this is an old topic but, the mounting of the spare is a surprise to me. Any thoughts on the matter? Chuck
Thanks, Chuck

We so often see 71-73 sportroofs/fastbacks with space savers a full size spare just didn't stand out for me until you mentioned . Mounted up similar to as in a Cougar. Hmm will have to look at some additional pictures.
Follow up

The difference in mounting appears to be related to the fold down or non fold down rear seat choice. With the non- fold down there is additional space over the rear end to mount a full size or space save spare where on a fold down car the rear bulk head support is moved rearward leaving only room for a space safer mounted to the passenger side rear floor

I was under the impression that any car that came with 60 series tires and or fold down seat got the space saver spare mounted to the rear and right. This car has no mounting point in "normal" location. I wonder if the spare decal is still on the inside of the trunk lid. Could it be a very early production car built before the side mounting was started? Thanks for posting pictures of a very nice car. Chuck
Thanks, Chuck

Question for the group.  I have a 1971 Mach 1 very similar to the before condition.  What's everyone's thoughts about leaving it the way it is or tidying it up a bit like in the after pictures?

Depends IMHO what "tidying up" means and what part or area. I think you'll find that currently there is more acceptance than there has been sometimes in the past for "less than perfect" and changing, improving or bettering can often cause a possible purchaser in the future to question what else may have been changed out.

Also have talked to and seen many cars where the owner thought they were helping the car only to find out later that they had destroyed part of the cars history or details.

In my opinion there is not a blanket yes or no to the question - just a "it depends" and its made after some specific thought to the task and possible unintended consequences

Just my view of a delicate subject

Just noticed the trunk has the "Dark" grey spatter paint that is called out for 1972.
