Underhood light
« on: July 27, 2016, 10:07:31 AM »
I have an underhood light on my 72.  My judging sheet from St. Augustine noted tape on the sheathing as incorrect.  As far as I was aware it was that way originally.  I going through my example car pictures I do not have a clear shot of an original underhood light.  I removed the tape from my light this past weekend and noted that the attachment clips ran along a strip that they were stapled to and this ran along the outside of the asphalt sheathing on the wire.

Should the hood light have tape the entire length of the wire over the sheathing or just to hold the clips at the connecting points?

Thank you. Is there a plastic strip connecting the mounting clips that is exposed between each of the clips with the tape only securing the clips to the asphalt sheathing?  If a picture is possible it may answer all of my questions.

Thank you for the photos.  In looking through other example photo's on another forum I am tending to lean towards a tape covering from the first attachment clip at the back of the hood to the last attachment clip closest to the light.  An alleged NOS 71 light assembly on eBay shows a taper covering over the sheathing.  Several examples provided on another forum show very original appearing cars to have the tape covering in the same location.  I am going to try and figure out the correct tape to use now.  I do not think it is the cloth friction tape as all appear to have a slight sheen to them.

Would agree from looking at originals, the judges and with Ed that the tape was most likely not original (even though you can find the repair on otherwise original cars) but a repair as shown in the one example I posted
