NOS vs. Service part vs. original factory installed
« on: July 10, 2017, 05:30:51 PM »
I am looking for an original, factory installed hood edge trim for a '66.  I've come across one in the "brown wrapper" advertised as now, as well as one in a wrapper marked Ford Service Part....  Turns out, neither of these are shaped like or fit like the factory installed part.  These terminologies are really misleading it appears, and an original, factory installed part is in its' own category.  I think sellers think any part in a Ford marked wrapper is the same part installed at the factory, but in reality it is not, at least in this case.

Though it depends on which part but yes you can nor assume that anything other than a factory line part will fit like a assembly line part.

I've tried the "Ford service part", otherwise advertised as "NOS" but the radius where the hood edge fits in isn't quite right....and I refuse to drill new holes...so...guess I'll keep looking for an assembly line piece.  Unfortunately after all the years, a nice, used one is going to be tough to find.  I just draw the line at having to drill new holes.

Consider restoring a known original piece.  Look for places that offer bright dip anodizing.

That's a good thought.....I assume without any deep scratches, they should be able to restore it to fairly nice condition.  I'll do some checking locally.

Was the piece originally anodized and/or polished?  I'm sure the shop will ask me which I want....assuming there is a difference.

You definitely want anodized.
Only polishing, will not prevent oxidization.

I can suggest D & R Chrome in Huntington Park, California.
