rag joint variations
« on: September 05, 2017, 07:55:04 PM »
I ran across a rag joint (the Ford name is much more verbose: Flange and insulator assembly - flexible joint - steering) on eBay that claims it is for a non-tilt application.  I have a couple on hand that are for a tilt.  Looking at the pictures the difference that I see is the fixed column version has two fixed "pins" whereas the tilt version does not.  The attached picture is an attempt to depict that.

Next I took a look at the 67 MPC.  Great, not only 2, but 4 variations for the Mustang:

1. 390 without power steering, fixed column - C6AZ-3A525-A. Also used on full size ford without P/S.
2. 390 with power steering, fixed column - C6AZ-3A525-B.  Also used on full size Ford and Fairlane with P/S.
3. Tilt steering without power steering - C5AZ-3A525-C.  No other uses listed.
4. Tilt steering with power steering - C7ZZ-3A525-A.  No other uses listed.

The ones that I have are a type 4.  Over the next couple weeks I'll sketch them up with a focus on dimensions.

I can see the tilt vs. fixed column difference, but P/S vs. standard?  Perhaps the standard has less flex?  Any knowledge out there?

If anyone has any that you know are one of the above based on application, please send pics with dimensions.  Let's try to get a handle on this.

Thanks in advance.

Pay attention to the splined areas, there are differences there as I recall.

The column part of a tilt coupler should have a 1/2 moon shape.
