67 390GT S Code belts and pulleys
« on: October 06, 2018, 08:36:17 PM »
My “all original” 67 390GT seems to be all but original when it comes to belts and pulleys. The car has PS, no A/C, to TE, manual 4 speed (if it matters).

Current setup has
- 2 alternator belts routed crank, water pump, alternator
- 1 PS belt routed crank, PS pump
- 3 groove crank pulley (with the front groove smaller than the identically sized middle and rear groove) over harmonic balancer (I.e. the groove in the balancer is hidden and not in contact with the belt
- 2 groove water pump pulley

What is the correct setup? From Mansfield part listings and posts here I’m guessing:
- single groove alternator?
- single groove water pump?
- C4AE-6316-A balancer with double groove add on pulley C1AE-6312-A?
- single groove water pump pulley C5AE-8509-C?
- 1 alternator belt over crank pulley (not the balancer groove) and water pump?
- 1 PS belt over front crank pulley groove and PS pump?

I’m stumped with all the permutations and wasn’t able to find positive confirmation for any one setup.

Thanks,

Jay

I assume you don't have the engine assemblyline manuals because of questions.  On Pg 68 and 69 it show's two different variations. One with the single alt pulley and the other with the double . Both indicate Mustang and both with PS but no A/C. The single alt pulley used the single accessory crank  pulley C4ME -A and single WP pulley. The duel alt pulley uses the duel WP pulley C6AE-A and the C5AE-D crank pulley. It all depends on if you had the duel or single alternator pulley.  It all seems to boil down to which alt pulley single or duel. Determining that aspect seems to be the key.Sorry that I can't give a definitive ruling on your particular situation.

Guess that is "no TE"  =  no 71 or 72 DSO

Just want to be certain.

When was the car finished?

Will see what I have and report back

Thanks and it does appear that car assembly plant makes a difference as to how they "dressed" the engine each plant received from the same engine plant.  Go figure  ::)

So looking at a fair number of examples of examples (though not all untouched cars there does seem to be a pattern) I found that your second or #2 configuration matched what I found. A few pictures to illustrate . 7F01S1145xx - 7F01S2134xx Not shown in order

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jeff - wow, you've put so much effort into responding. Thank you!

I am not sure how to interpret "your second or #2 configuration matched". Am I right to read this as:
pulleys/balancer:
1. single groove alternator
2. single groove water pump pulley C5AE-8509-C
3. (a) C4AE-6316-A balancer with (b) SINGLE groove add on pulley C1AE-6A312-D (see http://www.mustangtek.com/pulley/C1AE-6A312-D.html)

belts and routing:
- 1 alternator belt over balancer groove, alternator and water pump
- 1 PS belt over front crank pulley groove and PS pump?

I think that would bring the setup in line with page 68 in the manual that Bob referred to.

Yes  that is what I found

For others who are reading this or find this in their search for answers, this applies to only the specific application (plant, configuration of the car ) San Jose appears to have done things differently for one or more reasons

I have a car similarly optioned 67 as you. Mine is a thermactor car just do not have a system for it now, but it also PS, Non AC. Here are some photos I received when inquiring with this group.  I currently have a 1 pulley alternator but still running the crank pulley shown.

Do we know what the car was the pictures came from?

In this recent search I found that it appears San Jose used a different configuration of pulleys than Dearborn did. This sort of makes sense since the pulleys were installed at the car plant and San Jose had to contend on a regular basis with thermactor equipped cars and it made things easier had reduce the number of pulleys they needed to inventory.  Just what I found here due to this new request
