Title: Castle nut?
Post by: ChrisV289 on March 18, 2017, 03:36:34 PM
I forget, which castle nut goes to the bottom and top control arm where it holds the spindle. I forgot to mark them when I took them off

Did you look in the library? Under topic "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet,64-66" in the by application section, you will find your answer. (Hint, it's "Ball Joint" related.)
To further confuse the issue, or add clarity - try the topic "Hardware By Size/Dimension -". You need to know what the size of the nut you are looking for?

I'm in the garage working on the car on my iPhone. Thought this would be faster than trying to look at the spreadsheet. Can you just please give me the answer so I don't have to waste time going back in the house

The tall one is for the upper/lower ball joints.  Shorter is usually for the idler arm.

Interesting because I have two of each and all four came off the ball joints when I took it apart a few months ago. I haven't messed with the idler arm at all.

Some of the after market ball joints require a shorter castle nut for the cotter pin to line up properly . The shorter nut on a stock ball joint will have the cotter pin opening far enough above the castle turrets that it defeats the purpose of the castle nut. I don't know if  this is your reason but this a common circumstance that I have seen.
