Front drum brake question
« on: June 19, 2011, 04:24:10 PM »
I'm trying to find some replacement gaskets for front drum brakes.  The first being the gasket that goes between the backing plate and spindle (ford part #2044)  The other one goes on the other side of the backing plate between the plate and the retainer (ford part #2026)  Is anybody reproducing these or do they need to be made.

I had to make some of these last summer.  Check with Va Mustang or NPD though, they might have them.

I ordered some from NPD but the holes don't line up.  I will try the other company you recommended.  Do you know what material and thickness the one between the spindle and backing plate is.  Thank you again for all the help, everybody on this site has been very helpful!

It's a thin ply material, if you have any of the original, should be easy to make.

I used some lightweight foam packaging material.  Identical stuff to the originals that came off the car.

The piece that is left is paper thin and does look like foam, I didn't think it could be cork or paper.  Thanks guys, I think my wife has some of that lying around.

That's another V8/I6 difference.  I6 has foam there and V8 has a semi-thick paper gasket.  Remember that the backing plates are not the same as well as the spindles (at least for 65-66)

Charles,

Thank you for the clarification.  I will take a closer look at what is left of the original gasket, there appears to be only one ply of material left.

I have a question about the front backing plate to spindle gasket for my 65 V8.

But first a note on the grease baffle plate to backing plate gasket. I ordered a pair from a vendor who sells NOS parts. They weren't sold as NOS but as
"restored". They turned out to be "salvaged", all filthy with black old grease and apart some places. Useless. However, I noticed them to be of the same
foamy white material as the old ones on my car. So I assume this material to be OEM to early August 1964 SJ V8 cars? As mentioned above the material appears
on a close inspection to be exactly the same as the foam packaging material readily available (expanded closed-cell polyethylene). I couldn't lay my hands
on a sample, so now I have bought a 300-yard roll... :-\

About the circular spindle gasket, I have these from my car (see pictures).

The material is a sponge rubber type with brownish particles (cork rubber?). My question is: are these OEM/correct? Anybody knows exactly what material they are (in
case they are OEM)?

Does anyone have a picture of what this gasket looks like, NPD has part number 2044-1A but no pic and is currently out.  I didn't find much left of whatever it was when I removed the driver side backing plate.  Still have the driver side to go...

Guess we should have asked you to clarify what year and other details you could provide before we started answering what we thought the question was ;)

Could you provide that so that we can focus in on what the original material likely was and how to help you

If its the paper like material like Charles I've always made my own (for rear end housing to backing plates also)

As to the 2026-1A retainer gasket, the bolt holes line up correctly on the V-8 plate from my 66.  I have the original gasket as well and that is a white open cell foam.
The 2044-1A gasket for the backing plate to spindle was supposed to be available by now but the original sample disappeared and I have not yet found another one.  That was also a white open cell foam material on my V-8 66.  If anyone has one of these laying around I'd be interested in borrowing it for a few weeks or I need accurate dimensions from an original.

Scott, what assembly plant was the foam gasket on a V8 found?  I disassembled 3 '65 San Jose cars, all built in late January/early February.  The V8's had the flat gasket and the I6 had the foam.
