Title: 1968 water pumps
Post by: ruppstang on June 26, 2017, 09:21:41 AM
I am trying to find the difference in a C8OE-D and a C8AE-J water pumps. I have read past threads and Bob Mannel's book and have not found a answer. At one time I thought that the C8AE-J was used on AC equipped cars because it had a larger impeller but I can find nothing about that. I am wondering if the different pumps had anything to do with engine accessory's, car line or possibly when the engine was assembled.

The engine I am working on a C code 289 was assembled in mid May 1968 and has a C8AE-J pump and no extra accessory's . The car has 52K miles so I do not know if that pump is original.

Marty, the C8AE-J water pump has an extra threaded hole. Left to right, C8OE-D (L), C8AE-J (R).

My notes say that the tapped hole is 5/16-18 and is used for generator mounting.

Ok so the C8AE-J was cast as a possible replacement for the earlier cars that used a generator. It is hard to believe that Ford produced a new casting just to machine one hole. Would it be fair to say the assembly line used the C8OE-D in 1968 the was no need for the extra mounting hole on the C8AE-J.
Thanks guys

I dug out some of my water pump cores out and found a C8OE-D that was drilled and a couple of C8AE-A that were not drilled. I found no mention in Bob Mannels's book of a C8AE-A pump. I hope that someone can shed some light on these C8 pumps and their applications.

I find "10" J cores to every 1 "D" core. i recently picked up a "A" core .It is the first I have ever had or seen.
