Title: Kansas City Grand National Roll Call
Post by: BobV on August 10, 2017, 08:21:36 AM
Who's coming?

I'll be there with the 86 Saleen - Concours Driven, indoor spot.
I think I'll be helping judge non-Saleen Foxbodies...

I'm also the one building 450 awards...  :o

Will be there in Concourse Driven with the 72.  Going to trailer it up for the 500+ miles each way.  Headed out early Friday morning to hopefully be unloaded before registration closes.  Missed registration close in St. Augustine by 10 minutes and spent the next 45 minutes trying to figure out how to fit a 50 ft truck and trailer combo into a 25 ft. spot at the hotel.

I also have to add that the KC club has done an outstanding job of communication and preparation. Hats off to them for all of their hard work.  I can only imagine the hours invested by people in preparation and it leads me to believe it will be a very well run show and fun for all.  Already looking at the 2018 MCA schedule to make plans for next year.

Not I :(

2017 & 2018 events have been a bit too far for my time/money budget. Closest was the event in Indy, probably should have gone to that one (though wasn't technically an MCA event).

Hoping some more Mid-Westerners put in for something within a few hundred miles of Cleveland in 2019...I suppose we'll see! (perhaps my '67 will be ready by then & I have a Rig & trailer for my queen!)

Please walk me through the MCA site to see this. I look at the calander of events and see 2018 but not beyond. Maybe I could spend more time over there hunting around and log in more frequently/read the news board more often, perhaps read my Mustang Times cover to cover, such things but at a quick search, I do not find this information.

I "THINK" they have one scheduled near Minneapolis in 2019. May be a little to far north Midwest from Cleveland.  Sometimes you just have to say I am going for it and do so.  It is fun to meet others with similar passion and see cars outside of your own area.

We only post shows a year ahead on the website and in the magazine.  The shows for 2019 are:  Houston (March 29-31); Minneapolis (July 23-25); and Fredericksburg, VA (August 29-September 1).  We are still undecided about the 55th.

Anyone seen the news about flooding in Kansas City?  Any word if this will have any impact on the show this weekend?

Considering that Kansas is flatter than a pancake (http://www.improbable.com/airchives/paperair/volume9/v9i3/kansas.html), the entire state must be underwater!

Here's a post of recently flooded roads in Overland Park (http://fox4kc.com/2017/08/22/full-list-of-roads-closed-in-kcmo-due-to-flooding/), but a floodplain map indicates most flooding is likely constrained to rivers and stream areas (https://map.opkansas.org/map-viewer/#theme=Floodplain%20Info).  The Grand National is at the Convention Center, just south of I435, and appears to be out of the flood zone.  Access to the area may be problematic, though.

Yes, the flooding is not near the convention center.
It's the same localized areas that flood a couple times a year.
City is back to 99.9% open today.

Sensationalized news. Eclipse over, needed something to talk about.

Midlife, bring a bicycle to Kansas sometime.
After I take you on a 30 mile ride, tell me if you still think it's flat!!!  ;) ;D :o :)

Official communication:
I’m sure many of you have seen the national news report on the flooding here in Kansas City.  Well, no worries, we are high and dry at the show site, trailer parking, and all hotels in Overland Park, KS!  The weather forecast for the upcoming weekend at the MCA Grand National looks AMAZING!!!  Daytime highs will be in the low 80’s with minimal, 10% chance of rain on Saturday, and just slightly higher on Sunday.

And, don’t forget to RSVP to nonahernandezshowregistrar@gmail.com to get a seat on the coach Saturday night to downtown Kansas City for $20.00 per person.  Get your tickets when you pick up your registration packet at the show.

See you this weekend!!!

I would totally agree with that.  Having that indoor area with the spacing between the cars and the lift available was great. Enjoyed seeing everyone there.

Good show! A lot of planning & effort went into it, and it showed. Thanks to everyone who attended - either with a car, helping judge, or just spectating.
The volunteers are ALL pretty worn out today. My watch says I logged over 42,000 steps.

The preliminary totals showed a $45,000 donation of the net proceeds to Children's Mercy Hospital, plus $10,000 each additional from Shelby and MCA.  8) Between the young man, the donation, and that Star-Spangled banner, there were a lot of goosebumps and a few man-tears in the room on Sunday.

I barely had time to make one round of the outdoor lot on Friday. Helped with Unrestored judging on Saturday. That lighting was harsh indoors.

+1....I've been to a lot of good shows and more than a few that were frankly awful. This one has set the bar very high for any future MCA event. Fantastic job!

For those who did not see the awards - My company built them. We build livestock tools, not "awards", so we're pretty proud of the work.

We really enjoyed building those awards for the most part... Getting the polished finish right was really a trick - even with wrapping and sleeving them, avoiding scratches was HUGE headache. Not sure if you saw the vendor awards on the table in front; we did a brushed finish on those that looked awesome, but was even more work (and a budget buster). Since all show proceeds would be donated to Children's Mercy Hospital, we did the awards at cost, and actually wrote off the design, engineering, and programming expense as R & D work. We started these way back in February.

They are 3003 Aluminum Billet, 7" in diameter x 1/4" thick. The CNC work was about 12 minutes each on a HAAS VF2. The smaller logos and lettering were done on our new laser engraver (7"x7" window). Initial designs were 8" and fully CNC'd, but the cycle time was close to 30 minutes... (expen$ive!) The discs were sent to a company in Chicago who does electro-polishing. I assembled every one of the 450 awards myself on my office desk over a 5 week span. There's a pair of #4-40x1/8" screws that hold the plate in the machined recess -every one done by hand.
The aluminum inserts are anodized in 5 different colors, depending on the type of award, and Laser engraved as well. That material is actually what we use to stamp MILLIONS of Rabies Tags for dogs & cats...

(note:difficult to get great pictures, as the finish is VERY shiny, almost like chrome)

From a MCA staff perspective it was one of the best organized and executed shows we have done in the last seven years. From a partiapant view point it was outstanding. I hope we can do as well in Lincoln NE. next year.

++ on the cudos to the Kansas City club for orchestrating a great event.  They talk of a couple of "hiccups" in the post show communication, but from my perspective it went very smooth.  Secured a Gold as well for the 72.  Bob V. your craftsmanship will be proudly displayed in my home for years to come.  Great job and a very unique design.

I was even the very lucky recipient of the drawing for the Barrett Jackson certificate.  Making plans for Scottsdale in January and I have a line of people wanting to go along.  Just going to be Dad and I.  He bought the 72 for me 35 years ago and I enjoy every minute we have together because of the car.

Seems a lot of folks don't know what makes a Grand National grand!  One thing I didn't hear mentioned was that points for grille medallions are worth more at a GN.  This is in addition to the T-bred Authenticity award, Unrestored Platinum, Concours Prestige and Modified Pinnacle.
