The FORD individual letters on back of my car have come loose.  Pretty good glue lasting for 49 years.  I would like to re-glue with something that may last another 49 years.  Yeah right!
The letters are metal.  They weigh about 1/2 ounce each.  The original glue is black.  The paint is original yellow.  I scraped off any excess original glue.

Two questions
1. what should I do to prep the surfaces of the trunk where the letters attached without damaging the paint outside of the bounds of the letter which I can see ?
2, what glue should I use now?  What I have seen on 1st try is for rubber and vinyl emblems and trim.  Not sure if trim would mean metal emblems

Thanks

What year and model are you working. Can't think of any glued on letters used during the classic period but don't want to assume anything at this point as you may be working with a much later car.

I used 3M Emblem glue for the MUSTANG letters on the 66 fender.  The glue is clear and is hard to see.  3M 08061.  I was very pleased with the results, and had no issues with application.

On many of the later stick on letters and emblems two sided 3M tape (may have originally been a different supplier)  was used cut around the outline of the letters.

The 3M double sided tape is the best....they use it for new cars too.  If applied correct you would never see it.

Jeff this is a 1968 Ford LTD  and the letters are on the lower part of the Trunk on the passenger side.  Everything else is secured with nuts.
