67 Shelby Sway Bar Hardware
« on: October 21, 2014, 10:02:55 PM »
In response and a continuation of a discussion of a thread in another section about 68 Sway bars for Mustang I offer the following

http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=9613.15

We had gotten off onto 67 competition and 67 Shelby (both GT350 & GT500s)  end link bolts. I have seen what appear to be two different versions of the head markings in the last couple of years as shown below

From a car in the low 300's. Sunken heads with no apparent markings in the center

From a car in the low 900's. Sunken heads with what looks like a N in the center

Believe that is what they look like - will find them and double checked time at one of the shops. Pretty sure that one set will get replaced with something out of a catalog :(   Not that it matters much on that car.

All of the longer originals I have seen were fine thread. Yes if replaced typically the replacement part If looked up under 67 Mustang would be replaced with the shorter 65-67 style. Not many were intuitive enough to notice the longer version for this special application. If they did and ordered the 68-70 longer version which is most similar it came with the coarse thread .Just my observations.

Jeff, and all.  My October built 67 GTA SJ car has those same sunken hole heads with no letter so, this just might be an ealy/late thing and not necessarily A Shelby application..
Bob: it there some kind of length to these?

You are correct it is not a Shelby thing but a Ford thing in so much as the hardware identification. The bolt is substantially longer on the longer end link tube version bolt compared to the typical non comp suspension Mustang end link bolt. The makers mark variation may very well be a early late thing. I haven't seen enough to feel confident about making a ruling on what the pattern is.  I haven't put a ruler to the individual bolts recently but they are easily distinguished because one can't be substituted for the other given the end link tube in use.

It's actually a letter V, as shown here on my signature car.
Fine thread 5/16x24. It necks down from .365 bolt shaft to .300 (approx) into the threads.
From under the head to tip is 6 11/16".

The Assy Manual says the standard fitment uses an S8 cone nut, S2 washers and an unknown on the bolt. P&O maybe? And the sleeve is what finish?

The bolt is the same length as the 68-70 bolt with the exception that the 67 bolt is fine thread. It is PO. It is not the same as a regular 67 Mustang which is shorter.  I have found the end link spacer tube in what appears to be bare steel. I have also seen some zinc plated spacer tubes but that may be a later service part. The tube spacer is identical to the 68-70 version.

Thanks, Bob.
If I ask something I do try and add something, like a pic, to the discussion. ;)

Is the washer an S2 like the other cars? I would think so consider it's probably just a standard 371179-S2.

Yes, S2 washer like the other years.

Back to this topic as I can't seem to locate my sway bar bracket to frame bolts.

The nuts appear to be 3/8-16 stepped cone locking nut, cad. 34444-S7.
But I've lost track of the bolts so I removed 4 from my parts car.
These are 3/8-16 with 1" thread all the way to the head. Head is 9/16 hex.
Jim notes these as 55693-S7 with a footnote that its replacement is a 20408-S8.
The Assy Manual just says 20408-S8. Seems odd that zinc or cad would be used here.

I can make out a possible circle but these are too rusty to really tell.

I don't see a difference in frame hole sizes between the parts car (C-code) and the Shelby, so I'm assuming standard hardware was used.

So, are there any head markings on this bolt?

After I wrote this and went off to do other things I found this nut and bolt. Is this the correct one (see pic)?

Yes, with 55693-S7 as an alternate.

No, the "W" indicates that the nut is used "With" 20408-S8. Just an aid in reassembly.

Not uncommon.

Probably not. I don't know why, but some bolts have no marking. That lack of marking also indicated a grade 2 bolt.
I don't see a difference in frame hole sizes between the parts car (C-code) and the Shelby, so I'm assuming standard hardware was used.
The bolt size was not changed for Shelby.

Should be.

Okey doe. Good to know. Didn't know about the "W".

Every pic of this area in the un-restored area of the forum shows that area painted, dirty or out of focus.

I wonder where the other 3 went?

Thanks, Jim.
