white hood scoop?
« on: April 08, 2014, 11:17:36 AM »
I purchased my  1970 mach 1  some time ago and  did some  research on it OK. The car came from Sc, It is a dearborn car  as per the marti report. Its a factory  black car with white stripes non shaker. My question is would the fake scoop on it which i don't have be white also? Would it be  correct  to  add the  complete  shaker assembly that I got off of a junk 1970 mach and Paint the shaker  white? Or should I leave it  black?  dilemma here . Mark

Yes scoop would match the stripe

Correct ???  well not if your restoring your car.

On while stripe cars the shaker is white also - not black

The look can be very stark IMHO Had a neighbor in the late 70's with a 70 Dark green with white shaker and hood stripes

Not sure if they will do you any good - since everyone has reformulated numerous times since these were published (Mustang Monthly 98 using Sherman Williams products)

1 part White - 48488
1 part Flattening Agent  - T1F271

Hi Mark, do you know if you have a 70 M code shaker bowl, or something else?
The heights of the various bowls are all different.
I take it you have a plain hood now since you can't convert a bolt-on scoop hood to shaker - too many holes and cutouts.
Is your hood setup for twist locks already?

Hi! I have a plain flat hood that I had the hood lock holes cut out and the shaker hole.I dont know what you mean by shaker bowl? Do you mean the air cleaner  housing? Well when i bought the car they had converted a non ram air hood  that had the  fake hood scoop on it. haha You could  see the indentations of the holes if you looked  right. The shaker Set up i have came off of a  cleveland car that i bought for  parts. It was a  2 barrel car . you must have a scj car? I had a 69 mach  with a  scj in it and no power steering. it had less than 40 thousand on it.It was black jade and a 4 speed car at that! Mark

The white stripe was an option so there weren't many made. 1,372 total (I think that includes shaker, non-shaker & all engine sizes) '70 Mach 1's had the white stripe option according to an article a few years ago in Mustang Monthly about a '70 Dark Ivy Green Metallic 428 shaker car.  I believe up until Nov or Dec 1969 you could get the white stripe with any exterior color.  After that time, the white stripe was only available for Black or Dark Ivy Green Metallic cars.  The bowls - air cleaner bases - are different between engine 351 & 428,  but I don't know about between 351C and 351W.  The shaker is white except between the fins, that is still black according to a Mustang Monthly question where a NOS white shaker was shown with black between the fins. We just finished our '70 Mach 1 Dark Ivy Green Metallic, 351C, shaker, w/white stripe.  We had it at a show and people were saying "I've never seen a white stripe" or "that's not right, they were all black."

That is interesting info!My car came with white stripes for sure but my car had the fake scoop ! I have the marti report that says this.I'am not sure if I will paint the shaker white.Maybe I will Get another hood and put the fake scoop on it and have the shaker also ! I beleive the bowls are different as the clevelands had that hat on top of it. I could be wrong !  someone put a cj  base on my cleveland! Mark

Just FYI, Boss 302 (1970 only), 351W, 351C (1970 only), 390 (1969 only), and 428 all use different Shaker bases. 69 and 70 are also different, and there are early and late 69 428 bases.  So there are a bunch of different bases....

Thanks for the links! Interesting that the shaker car sold for 29 k and the non shaker car they are asking 44 k. the non shaker car is not a original black car.Not sure if that makes a difference. Mark

I would guess quality/degree of restoration and options have something to do with it.

I believe up until Nov or Dec 1969 you could get the white stripe with any exterior color.  After that time, the white stripe was only available for Black or Dark Ivy Green Metallic cars.
Is there any Ford documentation that mentions the cutoff date for white stripes on a color other than Black or Dark Ivy? Have an early December ordered, but January built, Bright Blue Metallic with a white interior and white hood stripe.

Haven't seen any documents that referred to a limitation to the use of white shaker or the white hood stripes but getting Kevin to search the database would at least provide the answer if any were built, when was the last built or what car and color combinations were built.

Have seen a number of white shaker cars through the years and a neighbor had a green Mach I in original paint one back int he 80's
