MAR 66 METUCHEN service decal
« on: December 18, 2011, 01:49:37 PM »
Hi Jeff,

I saw in your Reply #3, to a guy's decal question about his '67, that those Metuchen '67's had the service decal applied vertically (sloppily) to be read with your head tilted left.

My MAR 66 car had traces that the decal was vertical also.  I tried to forensically remove paint coatings to see if you had to tilt your right or left to read it.  My car was 223904.

Do you have a pic around that ?

Looks like the same guy was working at the last half of 66 production at NJ (earlier cars are often different in this detail)

My January Metuchen hardtop has its original decal horizontally.  They must have changed decal guys sometime between Jan-Mar

Of course there were fill in guys (normal worker calling in sick and the like) and we have more than one shift at some plants. Never saying they were all the way but when you have nothing left on your car to go by we're looking for what the majority were like during a given period.

But yes I do see a different earlier pattern in my pictures/sampling ;)

Ah-Ha!!!

That car # 6T09C243575,  like mine, doesn't have the Ramp-Lock manifold bolts either.  I have always been 90% sure my saddle/tab bolt locks were original.  Now I'm certain.

My Metuchen '66 convertible has a build date of Oct 26 1965 (6T08C135871).  It has never been restored so I took a picture of the decal.  Mine is neither vertical or horizontal, but tilted about a 30 to 45 degree angle from horizontal.  It is also very poorly applied with wrinkles.

Thanks,
Fred

Thanks for sharing though your car was assembled 6 months before the posters car

As we can see when and where  can make a difference ;)

Also (looking at other time periods) if the car was equipped with AC that may have played a part in where the decal was located. Finding some on the drivers side inner fender rather than the shock tower on V8s

I have noticed over the years that the majority of the '65-'66 cars that have the Vertically placed Service Decals were all factory AC cars.  I have not really seen Vertically placed decals on Non-Factory AC cars.  Most Non-Factory A/C cars have the standard Horizontally placed Service Decals.   I'm wondering if this was a way down the assembly line to tell other assembly line workers whether the car was and A/C equipped car or not... Just a "Speculation".  I have always wondered this.

Thoughts?!??

Are you asking about NJ cars specifically or all 66's?

Of course if the findings are "most" then its not a real strong case and in turn may only reflect one worker on one shifts choice or challenge to do it otherwise
