To search the concoursmustang.com site using Google
« on: September 21, 2017, 11:11:26 PM »
The search option on most sites have limitations.

I use the following Google format to find pictures within this site:
site:www.concoursmustang.com text to search                || on edit == fix url
where "text to search" is a boolean search (meaning find the word "text", "to" and "search").
If you actually put "text to search" in quotes you narrow the results to that phrase.

Further, using Google's topic bar, you can narrow your search to images by selecting the "Images" button.

Add your handy tips to this thread.

Thanks for posting.  I have found this useful for many years, not for just forums either.

I've used Google custom search but like your suggestion better!

The actual syntax for searching this site is:

site:www.concoursmustang.com text to search

In case someone (like me)   ;)  does a cut and paste!

Thanks!!

I get into more trouble with spellcheck. I had just added "concours" to my personal dictionary.

Thanks for correcting my url goof (corrected on edit and noted in my original post).

There are a number of times users are told to "use the search function" to find some term.
However, I'm not sure many users understand a "feature" of this forum's search that is not well understood.
That is, the search box displayed on the top right of every page -- next to the words "Welcome to Concours Mustang" -- is context sensitive to only the content in that particular section of the forum hierarchy. It does NOT search the entire forum. Only the current section.

So, if you are reading this thread, move to the top of the page and do a search for "Boss" in the search box, the only thing returned (and highlighted) will be my name and any other content with the name "Boss" in just this thread. Nowhere else.

The same applies to any major subsection of the forum.
If you go to ConcoursMustang Forums » Library and then entry the term "Boss" in the search box, only the Library major subsection is searched.

You MUST select ConcoursMustang Forums » Home and then enter your search criteria in THAT search box to search the entire forum
OR
From anywhere in the forum select the "Search" button in the "Home Help Search ..." group of buttons and you will be taken to a separate search page that will search the entire forum.

After reading some of the user's comments after they try searching it appears this feature is not well known.

Yea, good point.

Nice explanation and that should help folks with their searching through all of the great info on this site.

I use this feature quite often and it has saved serious time finding what I'm looking for. So, while these have already been mentioned, I'll restate how to search in different manners that might be more clear:

One of my first searches was for front suspension paint daubs. So, I typed in [site:concoursmustang.com front suspension paint daubs] and it returned threads that had and/or part of the phrase "front suspension paint daubs" to include each single word within the query. So, to narrow the search, I typed [site:concoursmustang.com "front suspension paint daubs"] which returned results with that phrase only.

Sometimes broader search terms such as just using paint daubs or suspensions paint daubs may return the results you want.

In order to selectively search all or a single forum all you need to do is click on "Search" in the bar at the top of the page & then click on the + next to "Choose a board to search or search all", grey bar. This will allow a  search in any forum you select or all forums.
