66 hipo pcv valve questions

I've  got a C5AE-6A666-B-C.S.CO pcv valve on my Nov 65 built Shelby. It looks to be maybe original. Also looks like a natural finish on it. Is this correct for my hipo and should it be clear zinc or gold zinc or natural?

I have always seen them clear zinc(silver). I have some NOS ones in the old box's that are that way too. When the thin plating goes away it becomes more dull bare steel looking which makes it easy to be confused about the finish.

Thanks Bob,

That was exactly what I thought might be the case on the finish. Before I send this one out, can you confirm if this would be correct/original for my early 66 hipo. When I look up the number it only tells me that it is a PCV valve for 65 and I kind of knew that much based on PN. Perhaps they were all the same for V8s?

Remember that when you "look up" part numbers consider the source since they will often list what will work (service part) verses what was originally used on the line. All factories/car makers do their best to reduce inventory needs by consolidating parts to as few as possible - saving dollars, space and time for employees and share holders

True that Jeff. I guess the only way to know what was original to the car is to find  a couple of owners that absolutely knows their PCV valve to be original, assy line pieces, and compare that data. Can you  tell me if the 65/66 V8 PCV valves were all alike or did the hipo stand apart. That much would be a start.

The '65 and earlier '66 were the "hex" style, and in mid-'66 sometime (at least on the GT350's) they went to the "round" style.  Do you have a picture?

This is what I would expect to see on your car (sorry, the picture isn't that great):



As Bob mentions, I have only seen the clear zinc plating on these.

If you include all V8's in the early years there are a number of different suppliers at some plants with variations that (from what I've seen) are seem on hipo's from all plants

AC (different finish - but don't want to get off thread) was one of those providers that were used on the V8's that I've not seen on K codes - especially as late (relatively) as your car

Good timing. I was just going to post that pic again and saw it had just appeared. Took that photo several years ago. The valve on the left is an NOS A/C style and came in box in the photo, the valve on the right is a used C.S.CO style that I had replated in silver zinc.

From my research, which I admit is largely anecdotal, the hex base valve was used fairly late into 66 production, including HiPo's and GT350's. This includes at least one 66 GT350 around car#1000 that still has what is believed to be the original A/C style C5AE valve.

Possible? "C5AE-6A666-A" is on the valve along with "AC SPARK PLUG TYPE CV-666C"

I've read Bob Mannel's info on SBF PCV valves and had at least one personal email exchange with him on the subject. The key issue is when in 1966 did the round valve start being used. There are several period 66 GT350 mag test articles that clearly show those cars having the hex base valve. Those are likely fairly early production cars and I assume other SJ V8's would have the same. My personal opinion based on observations and communications is the hex base valve was used until mid-66, maybe a little later, at least at SJ.

While I realize the poster was specifically looking for Nov 65 Shelby info (i.e. an SJ car), I can say that my Oct. '65 Metuchen A-code car came equipped with the serviceable hex base C.S.Co.  C5AE-6A666 on it (along with other '65 style parts).
