Features that make up a 67 GT
« on: September 16, 2018, 04:01:38 PM »
ADMIN NOTE: The following was split from another (now locked) thread that started out trying to cover both 67 & 68 in the same thread ;)

For 67 Base car and GT options the following applies. Note that only 67s are included in this chart and only models that had a GT option available.

Mechanical

___________________________________________________________

1) Wide Oval White Side Wall tires
2) Indicates Heavy Duty Suspension. These indicated models can order the additional Competition Suspension option, but the two suspension are not equivalent.
3) K engine option mandates the GT option; no base K car
4) Badge reads GTA on Automatics only
5) Pop open GT gas cap only with Exterior Decor Group

* Note that the competition suspension is not included here.  Do a search for the words "Competition Suspension".

* The term "GT 390 engine" does not indicate a true GT. All of the above must apply.
* Do not confuse the Exterior Decor Group appointments with those of a GT.
See this thread for a list of items in the "Exterior Decor Group".

The suspension on the 390 base may well be in-between the 289 base cars and the GT version.
I've noted the bigger the sway bar (SB), but it probably has bigger springs (for weight).

1- Don't think you need a notation there as a standard suspension would be a standard suspension for a 390 so cross reference or mention to other engine sizes is not needed IMHO and possibly confusing

2- Since it should be a complete list/chart there IMHO should be 6 cylinder on the first line - just to cover everything ;)

3- I would drop the "GT" from the engine line since there is on GT 289 2V and it wasn't any different than the Base 289 2. More words isn't good in a chart - and can be interpreted by others in ways not intended

4- Lastly would not use "RPO" under the heading of Stripes for the non-GT applications Most common definition is Regular Production Option or at least that is what it communicates to me

Just some thoughts from a quick look

1.) Agreed
2.) I was only trying to cover models that could be come GTs.
3.) How about engine code?
4.) Deleted RPO and noted lower stripes.

3.) How about engine code?

Would loss the Base and GT before A code (for example) since there wasn't a GT A code engine or any other than one A code engine - same for others. Not looking to get into Thermactor -nonThermactor or the way Ford used GT to describe the 390's some times ;)

Just me

Glad your trying to keep this chart 67 only

Jeff -- what I'm trying to get across with engine code is that one could apply the GT package to any V-8, not just the 4 barrels as in 65/66.
You could order the GT with the 289 2V, 289 4V, 289K (default) and 390.
The 289 2V and 4V I listed due to the single exhaust issue, as both just had a single exhaust.

I wasn't addressing the GT 390 engine name or trying to link GT to anything other than the overall sales package name.

I'll clean up the Engine name to stipulate only the Code and add a package code.

Your doing a fine job with this - just offering feedback. Everyone organizes things the way it makes sense in their heads (plenty of my attempts here ::)  In the end we work to get it better so more can understand our message clearly but still a small percentage (if we're successful) will adapt so that they get the info they need

Next comment might be to place a short description at the bottom in italics that WO = Wide Ovals  not With Out :)   Took me a few second to figure out you were not saying "F70-14 WO H/D"  F70-14 without heavy duty.  I understand that getting things to line up where you want on a forum is difficult at times since there are no tabs or other helpers as there are in word processing programs or what ever they are called today

Guess part of this is going to be the need to explain the GT verses GTA designation available this year only somewhere on the chart since you didn't limit yourself to just mechanical items on your list

Thanks for the breakout, Jeff.
I appreciate the help with making this useful.
Tomorrow I'll update and add a few things to the chart.

Updated first post to split out mechanical from cosmetic.
Added suggested footnotes.

Great job.

Perhaps the competition suspension could be a footnote “2” by the K and S code GT H/D suspension saying it was optional for these two cases only

Another footnote to consider would be to state that although many Ford documents refer to the 390 engine as the “390 GT”, a car with the S code but without the GT equipment group option is NOT a GT/GTA Mustang

One more item, many confuse the vented hood as a GT hood.  Compounded when they have a 390 GT and a GT hood when you try to explain that they don’t have a GT/GTA  :-X. A footnote might help with this.  We could go on forever but I’m thinking of the common misconceptions

John -- I added a footnote so that people would not confuse the H/D suspension with the Competition Suspension. When I have time I'll search for a link, if there is one!
Also added the 390GT engine bit.

Your post reminded me start on the Exterior Decor Group option for which I created a placeholder thread (which is currently incomplete).
