390 IP
« on: September 10, 2018, 10:14:14 AM »
I see online that many people refer to the 390 engine in the 1969 Mustang as IP or improved performance. I have never seen any Ford literature referring to the 390 as improved performance. Does anyone have any sources of this description and on a related topic, does anyone know how the engine option was listed on the window sticker of a Dearborn car?

Thanks

Jim

I never understood how they could call it improved performance myself, since the motor was detuned vs the 68 390GT.
The 69 cam was tamer, and the exhaust manifolds changed for the worse flow wise, not certain the compression was reduced, but it wouldn't surprise me.
Lack of literature equates to nothing to brag about or want to point out I think.

It looks like the 69 and 67 are basically the same with the same camshaft. The 68 got the GT/CJ cam but not much else is different from the other 2 years.

The 1969 S code 390IP has a intake manifold with small runners and an Autolite 4300 carburetor. No thermactor smog.

I looked thru all my autolite hipo books and Ford muscle parts catalogs and only found the IP listed in a chart for 69 mustang  but not discussed
At least I garnered 10.5:1 compression ratio
There was also a 390 PF, a 2V requiring premium fuel hence the designation

Here's some FE forum info but Kevin Marti might be the only one who can help with the window sticker description
