Mustang 1964 1/2 - Exhaust system
« on: April 09, 2024, 02:01:10 PM »
Hi everybody,
I'm trying to figure out how was the exhaust system of my Mustang 1964 1/2 D code 4 speed manual, when it left the Dearborn factory in April 09th ?
I understood it was a single line without resonator. A previous owner (couldn't get in touch with him) converted the original system in dual exhaust line at a time.
How the muffler should be installed : longitudinal or transversal position ?
Should it be one or two mufflers ?
I read different workshop manuals and topics in different forums but couldn't get a clear answer.
By the way my Mustang is celebrating its 60th anniversary today ! still in good shape, spent most of its time in southern California and now in France for the last 4years.
Thanks again for all these informations and experiences shared on this forum
Kind regards,
Didier

Your type of exhaust system is shown in the "1964-65 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual" (AM0005) pg 33. I included a copy of that page (the red arrow was an answer for another member's question). I suggest you get a set of the assembly manuals.

A correction. The attached picture is that of a 6 cylinder Mustang from the "1964-65 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual" (AM0005) page 32 . My recorded shows I scanned this page in June 2004, and altered the title in Feb, 2012, incorrectly. See my latest post for the correct 1964 - 65 V8 exhaust installation, which is page 33 (same manual).

Thanks Jim for the answer.
I"ll get this set of assembly manuals.
In the enclosed picture, I guess it's about a L6 engine.
For a V8 engine an exhaust Y pipe C5ZZ-5246-F should be added. Nevertheless it doesn't change the exhaust setup : muffler stays in transverse position.
I was just wondering if the muffler was in longitudinal position in the early Mustang (like in the Falcon).
Kind regards,
Didier

Attached is the correct drawing from the "1964-65 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual" (AM0005) page 33, for a V8 single exhaust Mustang.

Thanks Jim for the correct diagram.
In the meantime, I'm waiting for the manuals to reach my home in France.
Kind regards,
Didier
