Title: Buck Tag - 69 Dearborn
Post by: 13Outlaw on February 23, 2015, 11:55:57 PM
Does anyone know what all the numbers stand for on the Buck  tag. I know of course the VIN body an paint code, but not sure what the other numbers are an why it doesn't have the trans code? For instance what is the "452" "RM" "RAC" H-2 R-2? Thanks
 Thanks for any info

Just thought I would add a photo of my original Buck tag and what Marti said the letter information stood for.
1969 Mach1, 2/24/69,  Metuchen built. Yes 46 years ago today the Mach was built :)
I'm assuming the "71" is some sort of rotation number, he didn't say. I know it's not the DSO cause my Mach1 was delivered to the Charlotte DSO (22).

GT=GT suspension, TT=Tu-Tone hood, CL=courtesy lights in doors, RM=remote mirror, MO=rocker molding, HP=hood pins
and 3S=internal plant code.

Nice looking Buck tag.  The Marti Tag Book is a great resource book all though a bit difficult to understand when describing the buck tags.  Yes the 71 is a rotation number and is more correctly referred to as the Body and Paint sequence number.  Brian

Does my buck tag look different because of the plant it was built at, I've seen a lot with the jagged edges...

Your tag location and square edges, is typical for Dearborn in 1969/70.

Yes plus the codes differ from plant to plant and between different time periods

It doesn't have the trans info since that didn't matter to the guys that would use the buck tag on the line.  Remember this tag was to help instruct line workers during the first half of the assembly - body and trim. So things than needed holes or different brackets is what was important

452 would be the cars first rotation number (as mentioned) the odd H2 R2 were inspections if I recall correctly

Rocker molding and painted mirrors would be the others

Jeff,
Thanks for the info! That makes sense on the trans code, never thought of the obvious.
Thanks again!

jeff at what point in the assembly line did they need to know about 4-speed to punchout the clutch rod firewall hole & install the 2 nuts in top framerail for the z-bar bracket & which 2 out of the 3 holes to install the 2 nuts depending on engine option but that would be known by the 5th letter in the serial # already on bucktag ?   just wondering :)

Don't think this has anything to do with the engine code since that could not be addressed in that fashion for a cars other than the Boss's. All the rest of the engines could have been ordered with an automatic or a manual

The frame nuts, I believe would have been addressed when  the frame rails were assembled as a sub assembly, especially since they are installed from the inside of the inner frame section. Not sure if they arrived at the car assembly plant but my guess would be that they were shipped that way.  Well before the frame rails were added to the unibody is my guess.

As far as the manual trans firewall punch out - its interesting that earlier cars had a designation on the buck tags for the manual trans (nothing for the auto)  but this was dropped by the time 69 came around on Dearborn and NJ buck tags. My thought is that something change - either this was being addressed in another way or much earlier in the process before the buck tag was attached to the unibody

by engine code id I meant knowing what engine was going in car would determine which 2 holes to install the nuts in as their are 3 holes for the equalizer bar frame bracket & either the 2 front or 2 rear holes would be used depending on engine size also under lh frame rail are 2 holes for p/s cast bracket & they are the same size & type nuts as z-bar frame bracket & if no factory p/s these 2 lower holes never got the 2 nuts installed

Ok now I understand what you were trying to communicate. Thing this was addressed as mentioned in the sub assembly process before the car assembly began or before a buck tag for a specific car was stamped. Sort of like having available different fenders would have been preassembled before they arrived at the cars  plant

WT8095    Good work.  I just posted a new thread a few minutes ago asking for info on 63D.  Great job.   I've been looking all week for any mention of 63D. Someone told me guys were really good over here. I believe it.  I didn't know about this site.  I've been on VMF for a while. Thanks for the info.

Glad I could help. The CMF veterans have a tremendous amount of hands-on knowledge. I can't come close to those guys in that department, but I am rather handy with a search engine.  8)

I have read two separate posts on 69 Dearborn buck tags. This post indicates the tag is mounted on the inner fender top, near the hood hinge and another post indicates the rad support behind the fender. Which is correct for a Jan built car?

The tread got off topic again and some NJ picture and info crept in I believe. Only see two mounting pictures in this tread one from the Dearborn car in the original post (to the radiator support) and one post showing a NJ location.

Standard expected location IMHO (where I've always found them on 69 Dearborn cars) is the passenger side radiator support near where the upper fender mounting bolt is attached. Not unusual for the buck tag to be under the fender since it was installed later

Examples through the production year. Pretty consistent

And a shot proving that they were in place when the engine compartment (and car)  was painted semi-gloss black
